New Wheels & Tires for my '71

Recommended Posts

OK, they're actually slightly used (3500 miles) 15x7 Panasports, with 215x60x15 Bridgestone Potenza RE950s, that I got as a package from Les at Classic Datsun Motorsports.

A few questions for the forum:

- Anyone have any comments about these tires?

- I torqued the wheels to 70 lbs, does that sound OK

- I set the tire pressure to 30 lbs, suggestions?

Thanks...Robert

Very nice wheels. The torque sounds right for a 12 mm stud (65-70). 30 pounds is fine for daily driving. The tires have a good wet tread pattern but the tread wear rating is 400 so they are by no means high performance tires. They should last a long time though with a wear rating that high (40-50,000 miles) IMO panasports look great on your car. when you change tires in the future go to a 225/50 for more performance with a lower wear reating.

Robert is the yellow car yours? If so was that a dealer installed top? I have one on my 71 and it goes up only half the roof. Thanks Jeff

Yes, it's mine. I brought it back from California last summer, so I can't really say if the vinyl top is dealer or factory. Can anyone chime in?

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'll probably take it to a couple of autox's this summer. I've taken my 1600 for the last couple of years (HS), so this will be a huge step up (BSP)...Robert

Hi Robert,

Check out this big thread, very interesting and could help you with determining where your vinyl roof came from. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14422&page=1

Thanks Alfadog, that was some good info. But I'm feeling kinda embarrassed after reading some of the comments about vinyl tops:

From HS30-H: No, certainly not commonly seen these days - but I bet there were originally more takers than we think. Luckily, I think most of the cars fitted with these either died of shame or got a haircut in later life. This is one early '70's style accessory that probably can't come back without a hint of irony.

From Gee: I thought about it, but it did look pretty horrible so I passed on the car. Other than looking awful, vinyl can be a trap for rust.

I can attest for the vinyl top being a rust trap. I plan to pull it off this summer.

Robert,

Be very careful how you take of that vinyl. Don't just yank on it an rip it off. I have heard of people ripping it off only to find that they put ripples in the metal roof. Sorry, I can't rember what the proper proceedure is. Maybe if you did a search on this site you might find something.

It does look kinda distinctive against the yellow paint, but still not my style. Good luck getting it off.
