Clip(Nut) for retaining front fender & lower barance

Hello,

I have a question about [63140-78500] "Nut- joint retainer"

I attached this photo,inside of my Z's right front fender,below the side marker.

Are these clips(nuts) applied correctly?I am wondering they might be up-side down.I replaced these last year,still they were available from the local Nissan.

If you know about this,please let me know.

The R-DRIVE parts books show the bolt coming down into the captive nut, so if the picture is simply upside down then all would appear to be correct? By that I mean that the head of the bolt is UP, and the thread is DOWN, and the captive nut can only work in one way with the bolt this way.

But maybe this is a good example of a genuine, original, untouched car, of the same spec ( ie - HLS30-U ) of roughly the same production period, being the ONLY true reference. I'm not 100% sure that we could trust the parts books or FSMs for detail down to this kind of level..........

Just to so that everyone won't have to stand on their heads I've attached an image containing both the original and a version rotated 180 degrees. It appears to me that the whitish component in the background is part of the turn signal assembly. If that's the case then the original picture on the left is the correct orientation.

I must have stripped at least a half dozen 240s in the past 12 months and if memory serves me right, they all had bolts going up with the captive nut on top. The other way would make removal harder. These bolts are on my list of the 6 most likely to break under pressure (fender along hood sides, corners, valance to corners, signal light case to lens cover, water pump, gas tank strap "j" bolt). A Z that had been worked on could have new captive clips (OEM or aftermarket) put on in any direction (up or down).

And is that a wheel of a jack in the lower left side of the picture or are my eyes getting worse?

I agree with MikeW, also in the lower right part of the picture (original orientation) appears (IMO) to be the bottom edges of the fender and valance panels,

I've been wrong before......

Carl, and MikeW; you're both right on the money. That white area is indeed the turn signal body. In fact, that specific area is where in the JDM cars the additional bulb for the PARK lamps (the ones you light up on one side towards traffic) goes. That it has no hole for a bulb is indicative of it NOT being a JDM turn signal.

Alan, although the parts book may show the bolt going in from the top down, in every Z that I've disassembled those bolts go from the bottom up, trying to get it in from the top down is a major pain due to the headlight acorn, which in the picture I'm enclosing (which I've lightened to show more detail) is just beginning to be visible in the upper left. But I agree with you in that expecting that much detail from the FSM or other book, would be beyond reasonable expectations.

Kats; you asked if those "Nut- joint retainer" were installed correctly. They are in the proper location, but they are NOT installed correctly. Those nut-clips should be clipped ONLY to the upper flange, i.e. the flange of metal on the FENDER. The picture you posted shows that the clip is clipping BOTH metal flanges, the fender and the lower valance. The purpose of this clip is to hold the nut in location while still allowing a small amount of adjustment when attaching the lower side valance with the bolt. If you look closely, you'll see that the flat part of the clip, which should be BETWEEN the upper and lower flange, is on the bottom side of the lower flange.

gnosez,is this nut's and bolt's position what you mean?I turned it up side down,I feel now it is easy to tighten end losen the bolt.

26th-Z,please show us the photo of Jim's car.I am really interested in it.

Alan,if you have a photo of your JDM parts manual's picture,also I would like to see it!

Perfect!

Personally, since I work on that part of the car with a creeper (On a flat platform with wheels that I lay down on), I find it easier to have the bolt going UP (like you had it in the first picture). But Alan's book does say that it should be going down, with that in mind, and knowing what you are striving for, it's perfect.
