Smog Pump Issues?

I finally got my 1972 240z running, it is alittle knocky, and lags a bit when you press the gas. I hope its nothing to serious. I did notice that there is a tube that is dissconected from a fitting. I can't reconnect it because part of it is missing, but when put my finger over the hole it runs alot better and not as knocky and loud. I was told it was hooked up to the smog pump but For resons unknown (probably for more power i'm guessing) it is unhooked. What should I do. I was thinking about pluging the hole and taking out the whole smog pump, Where I live I would not need it and its not doing anything as it is anyway? what do you think?

Chris,

Read what you are saying. The car runs better when you plug up the hole, but the tube was disconnected to make the car run better? Nonsense! Your car is running shitty because you have a leak from the unplugged hose.

The emissions hardware can be removed. You have to keep the vacumn advance on the distributer and plug the rest of the holes with perminent plugs / bolts...etc. You will have to adjust the timing and the carbs.

I read the top few threads. Spindle pin removal 101, huh?

Sure the emissions can come off! Get some nifty little brass cap nuts to plug up the exhaust mainfold. Do the same with some good looking hardware for the intake manifold. I like to use a sealer on the nuts to make sure everything is air tight. With the lack of air delivery now, the car will need a tune-up. You will have to tune the carbs.

I took out the smog pump, and next to come out is the tube that has six tubes to the exhaust manifold, i am going to remove this all, does anyone know the size of the bolts, or the plugs needed to plug them up. I would be able to see but i'm an hour away from home down here at college and I wanted to know before I got home so i could pick up the proper tools and plugs. Thanks

I would expect probs when removing these , I had no luck removing any of mine and just replaced it with a header , I would buy a handful of metric bolts and go from there I bet they are 10 or 8 mm , alot of z's that I have seen that are 72 or older with this smog unit bend back the tubes to get away from getting a header and because they have issues removing them as well, I have pics of my 72 without smog stuff , there are overflow hoses on the carbs and the return vent metal lines that must be dealt with when removing the smog stuff, as well as metioned before retuneing the carbs and the vacume for the dizzy, I bought a n36 intake with a euro balance tube from z therapy which eliminated alot of my smog stuff , also you have to decided if you want to remove the carb warm up water feeds, where you live I wouldn't recommend it but its not needed in fla.

Why do you recommend not removing the water warm up carburator feed in Florida ??? Reread your response and I got it !!!! It is ok to remove in Florida !!! I did it on my 72 240Z and I will probably do it to my 71 240Z soon !!! Just it was recommended to me to remove by motorsports auto when I got new carbs a few years back !!! Could some one explain the reason for removing water feed to the carbs. ?????? Has other warm climate people done the same and on also how many have remove all the smog stuff ?

Thanks

Yea a typo there, I have seen that on all the z's that I have removed the lines there were usually clogged anyway. They are very narrow and rust blocks them up. Also most anyone running anything other than a stock air cleaner has to do a bit a plumbing work or remove some of the smog stuff. Me personally I have yet to own a z that the smog worked or was still attached fully. I think if you look through the gallery of motors you will see what I mean .
