Price & Disadvantages of Switching to 4Spd from Auto

Anyone have an idea of what a fair cost is of an original, used 4spd transmission setup in good working condition? What's the best non-eBay place to get it? Looks like I'll FINALLY be purchasing my Z later this week after a very long search It's an auto and I'm seriously considering the switch.

Aside from changing the Z from its original factory specs, are there any other issues/drawbacks to go along with the switch? Is the transmission code even located on any of the data plates?

Aside from some aftermarket seat upholstery, the car is basically bone stock.

I recomend that you drive the car for a little while before you start to tear it apart. Address things like suspention and brakes including the rubber brake lines . When I bought my Z the first thing I was going to do was to pull the automatic and install a 5 speed. I ended up needing to first replace the master cylinder then the front rotors and pads then the e-brake cable and one brake drum. Then a couple of tires . I ended up driving the car for over 3 yrs then decided to redo the car. I changed to a different ratio diff . a lightly built F-54 280 engine Completly removed all the wireing , glass and interior. Repaired any and all rust damage found and am now reassembling the car with its headers and cam and so forth . However the Automatic is still in there and will stay . I realised that I really enjoyed the daily driving with it and no longer want the 5 speed. I drove a 240 with a 5 speed over the weekend and liked it vary much , not enough to change. I guess what I am trying to say is give it a while . Unless you are wanting a concors origional car which will now cost you from here about another 20K , then in dosent matter if you make the change. No one will care but you.

That sounds like really good advice beandip. My mind is racing with things that I perceive will make the Z "better" when I really don't even know the car yet.

Just for personal reference, do you know if the transmission is stamped anywhere on the car?

I think it is in the vin number. I am sure some one will say for sure. All the best of luck with the '' new '' car. Gary

I can also tell you the best non-eBay location to get a tranny from...ME!! I live in Cedar Park and have a 4-speed in my garage I pulled from a running parts car a couple months ago. Let me know if you want it (shoot me a PM or email).

Don't forget to post pix of your new car!! Heck, maybe I'll get to see it in person. :)

Here's one example of the cost of an early 4 speed tranny in good working order.....Not to long ago I was talking with Victor (good guys and member of this site) about Z car stuff...imagine that, and the subject of transmissions came up. Well, to make a short story shorter....I traded the 4 speed, out of my 1970, for a case of Pacifico beer. I think Victor is stashing parts away for the future.....huuummmmmmmmmm?
