I don't know if this is still the case but it used to be that in Florida vehicles were taxed based on how heavy they were. The reasoning here was that heavier vechicles like trucks caused proportionately higher wear and tear on the roads and other infrustructure.

California does that for commercial vehicles

Reason being that with higher miles per gallon, and alternative fuel vehicles the cents per gallon petrol tax no longer will bring the necessary funds to maintain/replace/improve the roads.

I find it hard to believe that there are so many hybrids out there that it is (or soon will be) affecting the tax base. For one thing they are making every other car and truck bigger with each new model. Plus to get anything close to the listed milage out of a hybrid you have to drive with a very soft foot. I'm guessing a fair amount of them just get slightly higher than normal car mpg out of them. I'd like to just think that they are planning for the way far off future, but I would never give them that much credit...

I hear ya, but that seems to be the excuse they are trying to use. I seriously doubt it will fly this time, but like you say, they may be starting to soften us up for an eventual implementation of something like this.

And that is the exact reason they're trying to pass the law now. The public perception of the numbers of hybrids being bought, used and projected is that it IS low. If they succeed in passing the law when it doesn't matter to the bulk of the public, then when it DOES become important, it's too late.

Remember this folks, government has ALWAYS found it hard to rescind a tax, and has ALWAYS been more and more creative in finding new ways to tax us.

Since required MPG values have slowly but surely been raised, it has resulted in a small downward trend in the taxes generated from the sale of gas. They're just anticipating how else to tax you.

Find out who the author of this bill is and vote him out ASAP. That kind of creative bloodsucking needs to be avoided at all costs. What would be next, a tax based on how many passengers were in the vehicle for those miles?

For those of you in other states, pay attention to your state's legislators. They're the ones that are looking for YOUR cash.

The sad thing is alot of people won't understand the loss of freedom involved in a GPS base system of taxation that tracks your movements. I encounter people everyday that think the losses of freedom from the Anti-Terrorism laws passed since 9/11 are "worth it for the added safety we have now". :stupid: No doubt these are the same morons who flunked Civics and currently have their heads firmly buried in the sand.

Yes very true , I just hate how things are put in with bills just to get them into law covered by another bill or law, unfortunately we have to be very careful on this we vote for and who we put into office < not starting something here being blue or red ok > just a simple comment LOL
