gas tank

i'm going to look at a 71 240z tomorrow. looks good in pixs and reasonable price( asking 5900 but negotible) most update were done 15 to 20 year ago. 85K orig miles, 15K on rebuilt done in 85.one major problem is gas tank leak at seam meaning u can only fill tank halfway.question is how much to fix, and what options do i have in fixing tank( new? seal old tank? plus cost of installing? i have no mechanical skills to do this my self) thankyou very much

I have redone two tanks in the last few months so heres the info I can share with you. If the tank is leaking some places can repair them depended on the size of the leak, just to have it cleaned and pressure tested is $120- 200, but that doesn't include labor thats you doing it< removal and reinstall>. Also when removing a tank from a 30+ year old car expect to replace the vapor tanks lines which can cost between $135 -210 in lines again just parts. I also would put a new sending unit in it at the time $25 . Now you might find someone to do the tank repair cheaper like while it is on the car. But I highly recommend doing it right the first time, leaks and fumes are nothing you want to play with. One time bottoming out could ruin you day if you get the righ spark and amount of fumes. Good Luck and hope you get the car. The repair of the tank can be a very good haggling point for the price.

You might want to check with one of the following places that does that sort of thing:

I'm checking into having one done here shortly myself. From what I've found on their websites you can pretty much expect somewhere in the range of approx. $150-$300 depending on the overall condition of the tank to "recondition/repair/renu" it. You should be able to pull and install the tank yourself and save yourself some money, other wise you're probably looking at another $100-200 to do that. Hope this helps.....

It might just be several pinhole leaks in the same general area. You'll never really know for sure until you get it out of the car. If you send it to one of the above mentioned shops and it's going to be mega-bucks and you don't want to lay out that kind of money then just tell them "No Thanks" and have them send it back to you. At the most you'd maybe be out $20-40 bucks in shipping and that would be about it....

Moyer's can fix ANY fuel tank, no matter how bad it is. But it can cost alot.

Your guestimate of $500 to $1000 (USD?) should be enough to put the fuel system in good order unless you have to send the tank to Moyers. (Their service can cost $800 alone)

Most FULL SERVICE Radiator Repair shops can repair moderate leaks, and seal the tank. But, I wouldn't recommend having them do the removal and installation. If you cannot do the removal and installation, IMO it's best to find a competent Automobile Service Center to do it and let them farm out the fuel tank repair work someone they trust who will warrantee the repair.

I restored my gas tank on my 73 240Z using the POR 15 supplies to clean and seal the inside. The POR 15 worked very well except I wasn't careful enough and I got the supply like clogged with the sealer. And now I don't know how to remedy this? Any ideas . It appears that the supply line may be brazed to the outside wall of the gas tank. Is that true ? Does anyone know? And can one heat this and remove the entire supply line for clearing the clog.????

I also used the POR 15 stuff to redo the outside of the tank and it looks better than new.

I believe that it is soldered to the wall of the tank. I also believe that it is attached to the inner bottom of the tank as well.

This is the sort of thing that "I" would leave to a professional. I'm not into blowing myself up by applying heat to a gas tank.

I suspect that getting the sealer out of that tube is going to be difficult as it's meant to stick (and stick well) to the metal.

Others will likely have different opinions

If the sealer is still wet, put the air hose to it, if not, put the tank in the back of the truck and have it done. I have tried filling the tank up with water & co2-not nearly as easy as it sounds-and welding. No explosion, but no success either. Save yourself the 2 to 3 hours of immensely heightened stress from the nervousness and anxiety-get it done by a shop that has been there enough times to know what to do comfortably.
