L28 Carb? or FI

The mechanical parts of the stock EFI system i.e. AFM, fuel pressure regulator, etc. seldom go bad. The electronic parts, i.e. thermotime switch, cold start valve, temp sensor, fuel pump, etc. also hold up fairly well, and are readily available and not too expensive should you need them. Dirty or corroded connectors can be cleaned or replaced. Again not at much cost. As far as you list of main advantages my Z (and 810) will match or exceed the list. I guess it's just a matter of preference at to whether or not you like the appearance. Both of my EFI cars were obviously used when I bought them and the Z cost me less that $100 to get it to run properly, a fi relay and some clean up on the aforementioned connectors. The 810 cost me a cold start valve and thermotime switch which I purchased from the junkyard for about $12 total. 8 years ago for the Z and 2 years ago for the 810. I have had to do nothing with either of them since other than normal maintainence since.

I'm glad it's working out for you Steve..but some of us who's running or used to run FI wasn't very fortunate. I guess it all boils down to preferences.

I see your soon to be San Bernardino resident..I'm just an hour away or less..maybe we can hook and have a few beers.

From what I've heard people say, I must be living a charmed life with my fuel injected cars. I've just always had good luck with them. But then again, I never had a problem with flat top carbs either. Had them on a 510 a few years back and also on a 620 pickup. Oh well. Where do you live? I don't drink but I rarely miss a chance to get together with people and talk Datsun.

Steve,

Those flat tops you had on the 510 were more than likely the SSS1800 JDM carbs from the 610 and not the boat anchor Z flattops. Hate to see those 38mm carbs get a bad rap when they are not the offenders.........

There always seem to be a quantity of the Holley lashups for sale on Ebay for cheap. Almost makes one wonder why........ Just saying.

They (both sets) were 46mm 'Boat Anchors' rebuilt and 'played with' by myself and a couple of friends of mine back in the late 70s/early 80s. Let's just let this thing go! This is the second time you've tried to tell me what kind of carbs I had.

I would disagree also. The EFI system electronic, and isn't more complicated than a set of synchronized carbs. You've got a couple temperature sensors, a trottle position sensor, and an air-flow sensor. The rest is just the wiring to turn on the injectors. The ECU isn't any more complicated than a good MSD controller, and don't confuse the car's electrical system with the EFI system!

Even the auxillary stuff like the EGR valve, Aux Air system, intake warmers, etc., are all mechanically-based and separate from the EFI stuff.

Carbs are more on the 'mechanical' side with a choke cable, inside are bowls, floats, needles and jets...

This is exactly what I was saying Tommy , read your own post. At least 5 or more sensors plus 6 injecters and a computer. I have 2 carbs. cant get much simpler than that ! I set my carbs maby once every couple of years. Gary
