Reproduction Taillight Lenses - Can have them made

Recommended Posts

Ah! correctly colored lenses, The same molds could make the clear variety as well.

I'd spring for 2 sets but only with the correct coloring-the price is coming down...

I just emailed them asking for details of hw they would deal with the lens having a clear section and red(I don't see aproblem), and a glued in reflector(maybe a red flag), I offered to take pictures if needed, I did forget to address the chrome piece in the middle, but only because I am almost through with a solution for it!

Here is my Email to them, followed by their reply.

> The taillight lenses on a Datsun 240Z are actually a single lense with a clear portion, a red portion, and an embedded(glued in) reflector, all glued into a plastic housing with chrome plated reflectors. I can supply photographs if you need them.

The reply:

Hi there,

I do infact only make the lens. If you could send some detailed pictures i could answer your questions better. We can duplicate those deflectors no problem.

I cant garanty any kind of color match as its near impossible to do.

I can garanty that the lenses i produce will match each other but i cant match stock lenses.

New update!

I had to shrink the images to post them here, and that made the text difficult to read.

Sent message:

Hi,

Attatched, please find 3 high resolution photos with afew measurements and notes of and about the taillights I wrote to you about yesterday.

I can send a sample of the taillights is necessary.

Thank you,

William Stokes

Ps, I sent it to both addresses for you because hotmail may not allow files this large.

From Tina at Klearz:

"... as you mention they are infact 1 peice lens. if the reflector is glued on, it would probably just be embeded in my reproduction, as in not removable.

i ajusted the quote on the z page on our website.

let me know if you have anymore questions

thanks for taking the time to send me those pictures.

Tina,

Is there a phone number I can call to talk about the lenses for a few minutes, the reflector in the lens is actually a 2 piece reflector guled into the lens, and I don't see a way to cast it in a single casting, and keep the reflectivity(it is smooth on both outer surfaces, and obviously jagged between the two pieces that are glued together and then glued into a hole in the lens.

Hey there,

"...I see now what you mean about the reflectors being on the inside.

If the reflector can be detached from the lens we can cast it as a seperate peice no problem.

But it will be 10-20$ depending on the size of it.

Tina"

Will: What reflecter are you refering to? Is it in any of the pictures you posted? I've never had one of these apart and I guess I don't understand what it is and how it could reflect light "out" if it is glued to the lens (i.e. in between the light source and the lens)

The rectangle in the upper portion of the lense is a two piece (glued together) reflector(just like the reflector in a bicycle wheel) that is then glued into the lens.

The side markers are made the same way, but the body of the lens is one of the two pieces(I can post a picture of the side marker dissassembled if it will make this more clear).

I will take a stab at editing one of the previously posted pictures to make it more plain.

Ok, I need better lighting to take a photo that clearly shows that it is a seporate piece glued in.
