Gary: You may want to read these threads.

Some people say that a 2-1/4" pipe is better than 2-1/2". My car has a 2" and I've had another 240Z with a 3" pipe system, never had any experience with in between sizes. Summit Racing seems to have some of the best prices.

I looked at some posts about these mufflers. I did not have my Z very long before I took it apart. Which way do these mufflers go.... inlet/outlet? I had an old stock muffler on it and I do not remember the set-up. Is the inlet in the middle and the outlet on the bottom? :paranoid:

I found a pic of the stock muffler. It was round and the inlet was at the bottom and the outlet was at the top. What about the Dynomax mufflers... Do I want the outlet on top or in the middle? I am guessing I want the inlet to be in the center, correct?

My current Z has a 2" dia. Monza style system on it, but a previous Z of mine had a 3" dia pipe system with a Chevy Corvair Turbo Muffler on it. IIRC, the inlet was in the center and the outlet was at the bottom. I have an Inquiry in to Dynomax about the correct P/N for a 240Z. We'll see if they respond.

I got my 2 1/2" Dynomax Super Turbo from JC Whitney for $29.49. Bought mandrel bends from them at the same time to make the rest of the system. That was a few years back, don't know the current price on the muffler. I'm running it with triple 44's and the MSA header. Carl, I agree with the 2 1/4'' being the best for street , and I would go that route , except I have a 2 1/2'' mandrel bent plumbing already and want to just replace the muffler . I would go with the duel pipes as I have had these before and if they are interconnected it helps to eliminate the resonance. But with the 2 1/2 I don't want to be setting off car alarms. I have had the Thrush turbo and found it lacking and burned out quickly .The Super Turbo is there higher quality unit and I most likely will go that route. Thanks all . Gary

My exhaust system is very old and when it fails, I will be getting a Super Turbo Muffler as well. Probably will also have a resonator in the middle of the system. Definitely won't be going with a header. I'm satisfied with the OEM manifold, but I might have it sent out for Jet Hot coating, or I'll try a Do-It-Yourself coating.

I looked at the Dynomax webpage and could not find the #17723 turbo muffler. I did find a 17733 that seemed correct. I just do not know about the inlet/outlet needs. Maybe someone can get Dynomax to tell us the correct number. Someone sent them a message. Maybe they will respond.

There have been many threads about exhaust size in the mailing list over the years. I think the major points were related to sound. A 2.25" exhaust is quieter than a 2.5" exhaust and the performance differences are null.

I had a 2.5" exhaust and absolutely loved it. Of course I didn't drive my Z long distances. The sound from this setup is amazing and I had people asking me if I installed a V8 in my car... :)

I know there are new studies out that show improvement in torque and hp ratings for larger exhaust pipes. These have been done on V/8 cars, of course. I saw (Mopar Muscle) a Challenger that had an X-pipe with a 2 1/4" system changed to a 3" system. They picked up 12 hp and I think 16 hp in torque improvement. This was on a 300 hp crate 360 ci engine. That is a 4-5% gain. I have not seen any chassis dyno work for a similar change on the L6 engine. I might be interesting to know the outcome.

I am installing a 2 1/2" system on my '71 240Z (carbureted 280ZX engine). It seems like the correct size for the exhaust system. I will use the header (6-2-1) pipe size (2 1/2") for the entire system. I cannot see the advantage in running a larger system on a street car. I think this will breathe very well at 6,750!

I've got a 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust system with the Dynomax Ultraflow SS with a Dynomax Bullet Race Muffler installed as a resonator just aft of the MSA 6-1 header collector. You can get the part #'s and sources I used from the following thread.

I love the sound and performance of my exhaust set-up. I do not find the exhaust too loud (I just drove to Orlando and back last weekend for ZFest ~ 900 miles) or the resonance bad at all (almost non-existent).

As for the muffler, the inlet is in the middle and the outlet is at the bottom.
