240ZX Posted March 3, 2005 Share #13 Posted March 3, 2005 I have the 2 1/2" system with the super turbo muffler (the system offered by MSA) on my 1970 (carburated 2800cc N42) and I love the sound! Its not quiet, its not loud, it sounds like a sports car should IMO. Anyway, one point that seems to come up in discussion between the two sized systems is that the 2 1/2" diameter system tends to produce a resonnace around 2500 RPM and the 2 1/4" does not. But for me, well, I never run at 2500 RPM...just pass through it while shifting, so I doen't experience the 2500 RPM resonnace issue.
Sean240Z Posted March 3, 2005 Share #14 Posted March 3, 2005 240ZX,I bought the MSA system with Super Turbo muffler but decided to replace the muffler with the Ultraflow SS (i.e. straight thru). I actually drove the car for a while with just the Ultraflow and the car sounded awesome, but really, REALLY LOUD when I got on it. In this config, there was also more resonance with the 2.5" vs. the 2.25" I replaced (my 2.25" system was a MSA 6-2-1 header, 2.25" shop bent exhaust with Flo-Pro muffler - in this config I also had resonance ~1,500-2,000 rpm). However, once I installed the Bullet Race Muffler on the 2.5" system, the resonance basically went away and the system was much quieter. At idle, I have a deep rumble and now when I get on it, it sounds awesome!!Cheers,
240ZX Posted March 3, 2005 Share #15 Posted March 3, 2005 Yeh Sean, I contemplated an additional small bullet type pre muffler if I wasn't satisfied with the SPL and tone of the MSA system I installed. However, I'm a happy camper with my current setup. You just gotta love the sound of a well tuned and exhauted 6 cylinder engine!
Bambikiller240 Posted March 20, 2005 Share #16 Posted March 20, 2005 I looked at the Dynomax webpage and could not find the #17723 turbo muffler. I did find a 17733 that seemed correct. I just do not know about the inlet/outlet needs. Maybe someone can get Dynomax to tell us the correct number. Someone sent them a message. Maybe they will respond.I got the response from Dynomax and forgot to post their reply until now:_____________________________________________________________Thank you for your inquiry for Dynomax Exhaust. We appreciate yourinterest in our products. In regards to your 1972 Datsun 240z, I nolonger have the stock dimensions for your application, so I will need thebody length, and inlet - outlet location ( ie offset or centered) to seewhich universal Super Turbo would be best suited for your current pipes. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our techline at the number below. (If you want a ROUND muffler, this information isn't for you)Dynomax Super Turbo #17733 has 2-1/2" Inlet/Outlets (center/offset configuration), the body is 14" long, Total Length (tip of inlet to tip of outlet) is 18-1/2".Dynomax Super Turbo #17731 has 2-1/4" Inlet/Outlets (center/offset configuration), the body is 14" long, Total Length (tip of inlet to tip of outlet) is 18-1/2".Dynomax Super Turbo #17730 has 2" Inlet/Outlets (center/offset configuration), the body is 14" long, Total Length (tip of inlet to tip of outlet) is 18-1/2".These seem to be the best fitment for a 240Z in the "Super Turbo" line. There is another line (the Ultraflow line) that has some mufflers that will fit as well. They flow higher than the Super Turbo line, but IMO are overkill since the Super Turbo flows more than a Stock / Mildly Built L24 will put out anyway.Keith Thomas, Chet Whittel's Crew Chief when he was contesting and winning the ITS Championship in a 240Z (two years running) has tested their race car with a Super Turbo muffler and without. He found only a 1 HP loss with the muffler in place.
