What can possibly make you think that it ISN'T (wasn't) accepted in that location (in the market of it's greatest sales)? Just because you don't think it belongs there, doesn't mean that the US market agrees with that belief.

Many of us laugh when you and others whine about it's placement. Are your arms so short that it would be a burden to reach it 6" further away? :stupid:

Funny, I've been a continuous owner of one or more of these vehicles virtually since they came out, meaning almost 40 years, and the placement of the handbrake never occurred to me until I came upon this entry in this thread. I'm only 5'8" and have a 34" sleeve, but that always seemed to reach very comfortably, thank you!!

No offense, Rick, but did you read this entire thread before you decided to revive it after it's, what, 4 1/2 year sluimber? If so, why?fax0m8.gif

Hi, Mr. Blake,

I appreciate your reply. I'm new to computers and am, how do you say,

surfing around? on such Z Car sites as I can find. I did indeed read as

much as I could before contributing: many of those inputs were very long and

technical and hard for me to read.

So if I offended you or anyone else in some way, I apologize. I hope to "get

up to speed" and work my way up to more current topics as soon as I can

develop a little more mastery of this machine.....

Frankly, I wasn't even looking for dates, only content of text!! Sorry.....

All Z Best,...............Rick & Kathy

....and I seem to recall that the first 5-speed HLS-30 Z-cars were the 1977 280-Z's.

Are you actually unaware of the fact that there were HLS30 models that were not north American market models? All of these non-north American market versions were fitted with 5-speed transmissions from the factory - apart from the slightly later released Auto trans versions, of course.

Up till that time the only 5-speeds in Z cars were either transplants from the SRL-511 (2-liter roadster), or special ordered parts from Datsun Competition Department.

As has been pointed out in this thread - as well as countless others - ALL markets other than USA/Canada had standard 5-speed equipped Z cars available to them from the beginning of production and sales. Quite a lot of the early content of this thread - started in March 2005 - discussed that topic.

It seems from your posts that you have not really read through the whole thread, and ( as I've pointed out to you on another of your Lazarus-style thread revivals ) some of the people that you are quoting and responding to are not regular participants any more. Our old friend 'Bambikiller240' - whom you quoted today - passed away some years ago ( RIP ).

I opted for the latter in my '70, somewhere around 1972 I think. At that time those units were being used in cars driven by Sharp, Fitzgerald, Morton, Devendorf......

It's still not clear to me exactly what transmission you retro-fitted to your car. You have described it as a "Competition Department 5-speed", but you mentioned that it has a "0.854:1" 5th - and that must surely be a typo? Is it an FS5C71-A, or an FS5C71-B/FS5W71-B? All three of those were standard equipment outside the USA & Canada markets. You mention that - at the same time - you installed an R200 diff in your car, but this does not add up with the date you describe ( the R200 diff was not produced until some time after the date you mentioned ). The whole thing is very confusing.

I'm sure we are all interested to hear about your experiences with these cars, but almost everything you have posted so far seems to be somewhat inaccurate or mis-remembered. Please don't be surprised or indignant when these inaccuracies are questioned or corrected, as bad data lays traps for future researchers to fall into.

  • 4 years later...

Is the serial number on the firewall S30-00144 or is it HS30-00144?

My '71 is firewall stamped S30-05553.

Well things have changed and I may have to sell my fairlady. Its a complete numbers matching car but needs a complete resturation. Its a late 1969 ( nov) production right hand drive fairlady, serial number 00144. Its titled as a 1969 car ( please dont start on if there is such thing as a 1969 Z car or not LOL )

My problem is I have no idea what it is worth. Is there any link were I can find a ball park fugure?
