2nd gear synchro ?

Everytime I grab 2nd gear at high rpm, (6500+), the gear crunches as if I wasn't engaging he clutch properly. I have drag raced before, and it has caused me to miss the shift as well. It has gotten worse over time, and only happens when engaging 2nd gear. Sometimes when driving in traffic and things heat up, it's sometime hard even to shift into 2nd as well. If I shift into 3rd from 1st for a brief moment then that will allow me to get into 2nd.

I have a strong feeling that the synchro is shot. Anyone can confirm this kind of experience?

Is it more cost effective just to buy a used tranny instead of having someone tear it down and trying to replace/rebuild it? It's a late model 5 speed.

I think the 2nd gear syncro is one of the archillies heel on the Zed. I have crashed two gearboxes, both 2nd gear syncro in the past three years.

If you buy a another box, who is to say how long it will last - but then again you might be lucky - last gear box I got 2nd hand has been in the car for 12 months but it is starting to crunch in 2nd.

Have any idea of the rebuild costs for a 5 speed? assuming the sychro would be replaced?

The rebuild cost me arund $650 Aus (about $500US) but that included a 2nd hand syncro for the 2nd gear.

The box I have got is based on a porsche design (so I am told) that Nissan used in some of the 5 speed boxes.

I replaced my 240Z trans with a used one ($75) due to this issue. It's lasted 3 years so far and no crunching

The crunching will continue to get worse and worse until you cannot engage 2nd gear if it is anything at all like the VW Fox that i once owned.

If you can afford a rebuild, I think that I would consider getting one, while the parts are still readily available. With proper care it would probably last almost a lifetime.
