You mean the spacer is 40mm thick? that's about 2 inches, and I don't think the studs are long enough to work.

What is the thickest space you could practically or safely use?

Spacers I've seen have recessed holes for the studs to be secured with nuts.(so the nuts end up below the outer surface of the spacer) The wheel then rests against the full thickness of the spacer.
