What is happening at Blue Lake? I am a Portland Native, currently living in Sherwood (Between Newberg and Tigard)...let me know when you and Beandip are going to be there...

Also, PM me on who your mechanic is...I am interested in some engine work, and was asking Beandip for a reference and he never got back to me. Thanks Escalon (sp?)...

Blue Lake is the Annual Northwest Nissan/Datsun Owners Club get together / show at Blue Lake,Oregon. Last year it was so big that they didn't have room for all the cars. So, this year they are moving it, I'll have to get back to you with the details. Suffice it to say that people from as far south as Klamath Falls and as far East as Spokane and north Seattle come there for the day. This year it's going to be a 2 day event to allow more people to come. 2 years ago, I won 2nd Best L Engine which is an excellent testament to my mechanic.

Matt Anderson of M.B. Anderson, is my mechanic. He's on 99th Street just a couple of blocks East of Highway 99 in Vancouver. He's not the cheapest, but he is the recognized BEST in the Vancouver and Portland area as far as Datsun / Nissan. Even the dealers send him problematic cases. He works by appointment only. Call him at 360-573-7314 to speak to him and determine when he can work with you.

Note: He works on STOCK Datsun / Nissan. I'm not sure of the extent of "allowable" modifications he will work with, I do know that Weber Carbs are not part of his warranty.

When I first bought my car, it had Webers. Matt said he'd tune them, but that he wouldn't stand behind them due to their problems. He recommended I return to the SU's. I did so about 3 years ago and haven't had a single problem since.

I don't know if it is common. I had a crane XR600 optical/electronic ignition (kit number from memory here) kit that they sell for the stock distributor and an old mallory dual point mechanical advance distributor. I like the larger mallory cap, taller distributor and adjustable mech. advance.No brainer for me to marry the two instead of going out and spending more money on stuff.

I just removed everything off the plate inside the mallory that the points screw down on, mounted the mallory optical trigger from one of their XR kits on it. Took the Crane 6 slotted optical interrupter plate meant for the 240Z distributor and dremeled it out a little so it fit on the bigger mallory distributor shaft. They don't make a 6 slotted interruptor plate for the mallory. Align and time as described in Cranes instructions on their web site.

P.S. I have been running this setup for about 6 years (street and track) without a single issue.

YES! I would like the mallory information, as if it's the same price, I'd rather get the mallory!

Here's the part number for a Mallory Unilite distributor, L6 engine............MAL-4763901 (NOTE: they are available with and without vaccum advance)

Yes. But only if it worked on the distributor prior to installation of Pertronix. In short, the Pertronix Ignitor does not fix a vaccum advance that is already bunged up. It doesn't disable (or affect a functioning Vac. Adv) in any way.

Just curious, is it a comon thing for the VA to not be working?

On older Z's the vac advance plate can fail. It is basically two plates with some tiny ball bearings sandwiched in between the plates. This allows the movemnet needed to operate the advance via the vacuum diaphram. What happens is the grease that lubes the ball bearings dries out, the plastic cage that holds the ball where they belong gets brittle from age and heat cycles. The result is that the Vac Adv mechanism can get stuck and not operate.

I don't know for sure if this part is available still or not. I'm sure someone else can verify. Since I was rebuilding the entire engine, I opted for a Nissan OEM Rebuilt distributor, and re-installed my Pertronix in it.
