Hi all,

So I pulled my 5spd out this weekend with the intention of having the folks at drivetrain.com rebuild it. Only bummer is when I initially called, the person I spoke to said that for $50 they'd come pick it up from me... as it turns out when I called this morning to arrange this no one's ever heard of a deal like this and I need to ship it to them.

Now having lugged it around all weekend I know it's heavy. But I don't know HOW heavy as I don't have a scale and I fear it may be just slightly too big for UPS. Does anyone have experience with sending their tranny somewhere?

Did you use UPS or did you call your local freight company?

They are 60 or 70lbs, I can't remember which. Do a quick search and you should find another thread about this same thing.

Hi, The five speeds weight 80 pounds and maybe a couple pounds more with gear oil.

I have had to ship several of them and the best shipping company is Fed-x, and I buy plastic 50 gallon rubbermaid storage containers from Home Depot lumber yard to ship them in.

No problem. The containers cost about $14 and I get cardboard from behind Sears or an appliance store and use the heavy cardboard from fridges or stoves to line and pack them in so they don't break the plastic. I also tape them closed with duct tape around the top and sides of the container.

Works pretty well for shipping them!

drivetrain.com is charging an estimate of $650 for a full rebuild (new seals/bearings/synchros) and more if they find something dramatically wrong inside.

Turn around is supposed to be 3days although right now it's stretched to a week as they're pretty busy.

Hi Eric, I sent one tranny from Arizona to Texas and I think the charge was $60 and also one to California for just a little less. Your best way to get your shipping costs is to go to your local Fed-X office and tell them your shipping weight and the zip codes from and to where you want to ship. The actual weight after packed in the rubbermaid container and with the heavy cardboard was about 95 pounds for me. I tried the online fed-x shipping price program but it came to be more expensive and less at the actual office where I shipped it. And if you try the 800 number to get the shipping prices it is also a different cost. If you ask for the local shipping office number they won't give it to you. So long story short, go to your local office for your shipping quotes.

Eric, Not really sure, never have shipped through one. I would just use a regular fed-x office if one is available.

I don't think that it would matter either way. I don't have one near me so I use one of those mail places and the people there are just great!
