Hi, my question is, I have a 240z in bad shape, and I am college student who works, so as I see most of you want more power etc, but waht i really need considering price wopuld be aropund 3 in summer is the best economical swap to give the better gas milleage, probably a 4 cyl, the sr20 is expensive. a crappier engine maybe from a sentra (not ser) maybe? or any other one? any advice will be great I am looking for some 30 mpg and not requiering 91 octane. thx in advance guys. Hybrid Z says they only do swaps for more power so no very helpful

Having a car that weight like 2300 pounds should be able to have great milage, in a 100 hp engine.

My point was that virtually NOBODY is interested in taking a sportscar and turning it into an economy car. Sportcar owners are usually looking for MORE power, not LESS.

As I said, You'll be hard pressed to find someone that has gone that route. It just isn't an attractive idea to many people.

If you want a 100 HP 240Z, disconnect 2 plug wires.

your best bet is to find a L-24 and stick it in. By the time you mess around with a 4 banger and replace the trans and all the little things like radiator and such you will be into a hell of a lot of cash . If it is a rust bucket that you say , sell it as a parts car and move on to a economy car like an old Honda.

You also should know that the SR20DE/DET that people use in these swaps is not a Sentra engine. The Sentra engine is a front wheel drive engine. The engine used in these swaps is a RWD, non USA engine. I don't like them in a Z but that's just my opinion. I'll tell you what, though, the one SR20DET-Z I have seen was damn fast! But if you're looking to do a 4 cyl swap for economy reasons, buy a 4 cyl car instead.

IMHO, I would hate to see a 4 cyl Z swap. As an alternative, why not look at a Miata? Used Miatas can be had for cheap, thier engine is bulletproof, parts are also relatively cheap, it gets 30mpg even with spirited driving, and handles like a go-kart. Granted, you'll never blow anyone's doors off at the line, but that would be rare in a Z as well (unless you go the V8 swap).

Personally, if I had to do a swap on a Z and wanted economy as well as a little flair, I'd put in an Nissan LD28... that's right, a diesel. It's been done before (http://www.veggiecar.com), the LD28 motor is a basic bolt in swap althought no swap is without a little creative engineering. The only problem is that LD28 motors are becoming rarer and rarer (81-83 Nissan Maxima). Too bad really, or I'd be seriously temped to do it myself. Biodiesel, a very real and logical alternative to gasoline. Do a little reading, I think we will be hearing quite a lot more about it in the future, especially if gas prices top the $3.00/gallon mark. (or at least we SHOULD!)
