R200 or R180

Hey Guys I'm kinda new to the Z scene I owned a 93 300zxtt a few years back and am now building a 280z Drag Car.

Ok enough for introduction i was wondering is someone could enlighten me on how to check if the car has a r180 or a r200 i know how to check for lsd thats simple. What years Came With each Diff ans is there a way to refreence the VIN to the Driveline Info. thanks In advance for the help and Look foreward to learning form you guys.

So My 77 Will Have a R-200 did any come LSD form the factory, if not who sells a good lsd system for the r200 how does the Phantom grip unit hold up? How Much torque can it take before it snaps?

Does Anybody Know of a Solid Axel Setup for the Early Z's

I have not heard any thing good about the Phantom Grip. Nissan Competition or Nismo makes LSD carriers for the r200 and so does Prescision Gear. They are clutch type LSD's. You will have problems fitting the the carrier to the ring gear due to the fact the ring gear in the 77 R200 has 10mm bolts and the newer LSD have 12 blot holes. Try searching here and over at www.hybridz.org for ways to get around the bolt sizeing difference; it really is not that big of an issue, people do it all the time.

The turbo 300zx (pre `88) used a 3.7 clutch LSD R200. Remeber they are old now and my experience with used LSD's has not been all that great. You might not spend any more money buying a new LSD unit in the end. As far as the ability of the R200 with a LSD to take power. I do not have exact numbers but people have reported tham handeling 450HP for quite a long time.

For a drag car wouldnt you be better off with a live rear axle!? Most guys i know will narrow a ford 9" or equivelant.

If you are still looking to stay with a relatively stock solution I would suggest an R-200 with a Quaiffe LSD.

I'm going to ask a dumb question. I know what an LSD is, but what is a "clutch type" LSD? The clutch plates(?) within the LSD as apposed to what?

Exactly i've been lookin into that aswell (actually my first choice) i'm just unsure of how to make the 4-link or ladder bar setup work. I'm in temecula of the 15 do yo know of any local shops (so cal area) that could do the live axle swap?

Or Any guys that i might be able to talk to to get some help. I have the same question posted over on hybrid z but not getting much over there either.

Yes the clutch type has clutch packs that keep the diff locked until there is enough tourque to break them free then the diff acts like an open one. That is a simple defintion though, there are different clutch type differentials out there. The non clutch types are gear driven such as a Quaife but the explination for the workings of those is a little more involved.

Sorry to Hijak the thread a little, but is a Quaife LSD like a mechanical LSD that some special gear system to keep both wheels turning. The later series RX7's had a mechanical LSD with worm gears or something. Not too sure, my cousin is a Mazda mechanic and he was trying to explain it to me but I never picked it up.

Yes the Quaife is a mechanical LSD, Borg Warner made a gear type LSD as well...
