Here is the story, got an extra head when i bought a 78 z ,supposed to be for Z, took to machine shop to go thru it and do valve job. They think it is a 80's model N47, any way to futher identify other than N47, have intension of putting it on my 77, cause the cam is trashed on it. It has no oiler tube, holes in the cam lobes, no place to plug up in the cam towers. am i screwing up by swaping it without knowing what it is, hell dont know anything else about the motor either????????

Yes, you should identify the head before you do any work on it. Look between and below the 1st and 2nd spark plug holes and you'll see the cast head ID.

Why do you want to put it on your 280z?

What's wrong with the head that's on there at the moment?

Sounds like you need to STOP and think about what you want to do with the car as a whole. Maybe a compression test would be a good idea or even a leak down test so you get an idea of the state of the engine before you spend money on head recon.

Time spent now in planning will save you $$$ later.

as stated current heads cam is being eaten away by the roker arms, this head was free with a Z, minimum down time! is small cost to refurb the head.

So the where can the casting number of this N47 be verified!!

Cast ing indentification number should be cast into the head near the #1 spark plug hole.

That head probably has the internally oiled cam (no external oil tube).

Do you have any pictures of the head you are talking about that you could post? It might help people to help you if they can see what you have.

Ok i have uploaded head pics dont know if they have been approved yet here is the link http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=7742

all i could find was the N 47 that i originally stated, there is a "9-2" at the rear of the head on one side and a " # 19" on the other. and a "22" on the front or first cam tower. Any Ideas???????

Ok ! just talked to the guy i got the head from. He said it was a 78 Z, I dont think so, didnt all up to 78 have the oil tube.

anyway he replaced the engine in the 78 due to blown something with a used engine(he was told a 78) the valves were bad, so he took the old head off the bad engine and swapped them, bolted up , ran good, blah blah.

So looks like now that the valve job is done it will interchange but still would like to know the details or identification on it!

Thanks for the help!
