Speed dependant click

I have had my 72 since October. It has never made any wierd noises, but now it clicks in the rear end area. It only clicks while driving and seems to be more speed dependant. Even when rolling to s stop, you can hear it click ever so slowly. I'm certain it is coming from the back end of the car, and pretty sure it's not the brakes. The ride hasn't changed either. Any ideas? I need to get the rear of the car in the air and try to spin the wheels and listen or something. It's driving me nuts!

could be baseball card in the spokes.......

Carl's probably right to check u-joints in halfshaft. could also be something as ordinary as a stone trapped in a tire tread. does it sound metallic or just a tapping dependent on speed?

Yes, actually, it changes a little with cornering, sometimes is sounds like a scrape. I'm going to check the U-Joints this weekend. I guess I couldn't have avoided that baseball card joke, haha. Maybe if I get the rear off the ground I can spik the tires and see if I can locate it.

Cross your fingers that it's one of the uni joints. I have a click that changes with cornering load that I haven't been able to track down in over a year. I think I've checked and replaced just about everything so many times.....and no luck. I just put up with it now. :-/

when you are decelerating, tap on the gas, so you're making the car jerk...if you have a bad halfshaft u joint, you should hear a good clanking from the rear....also if you shake each end of each halfshaft, it should jiggle...they really don't make much noise once the diff is pushing on the u joint and its in motion. I have had to do the u joint replacement a few times....something is rubbing on either the driveline, a halfshaft, or the rear wheel assemblies...keep us updated!

I went through this a few weeks ago. I changed out the Differential and the half shafts. Seems it was the bearings after all of that. It's hard to hear when you have the car jacked up because there is no weight on the bearing so it doesn't make much noise while jacked up. I you disconnect the half shaft from the hub and turn the brake hub you will feel or hear a bad bearing if that's the problem although it may be very slight. Once the full weight of the car are on the bearing it radiates through the entire deck of the car. Also be carfull no to mis-diagnose it as a half shaft problem when you turn the wheel with the half shaft connected and the half shaft bolts are hitting on the differential housing, making a similar cylical clunking.
