Parts supplier cost differences?

Recommended Posts

I am going to need to replace the tie rod ends on my '73, so I've been shopping around (I have quite a number of other things to order as well). When I looked at the Victoria British catalog, the ends are listed at $19.95ea, however when I look at the Courtesy Nissan online catalog they're listed at $54.55! Does anyone know who VB's supplier is for these parts? Quality? that's quite a difference in price (IMO).

Hi Rick,

Of course a genuine Nissan part is going to be expensive. Nissan parts are not critical here. I don't know what brand VB uses. You can probably get tie rods ends locally. Just don't buy cheapo units from China or Korea.

I recently bought a set of Moog tie rods from Carquest for $32.83 each. I believe Spicer may also make them. These are some brands that I would trust and save a few bucks for other parts.

I disagree that Nissan parts in this application are not critical. Suspension and Steering parts are kinda important to your safety. I bought less expensive tie-rod ends (though not from VB) and they are definitely inferior from my standpoint.

First, they are not as "beefy" in terms of construction, and secondly they do not have provision for a Zerk fitting to regrease them. The manufacturer deems them to be "sealed" and "lifetime lubricated". Had I the chance to make the purchase again, I would go with OEM Nissan units for Tie-Rods AND Ball-Joints.

I'd be more than surprised if VB is selling Moog or Spicer. Their pricing is way too low for those brands.

IMO is't better to KNOW what you will receive before you layout any money that you cannot get back if you aren't satisfied with the parts.

Ok, ok.

Poor choice of words, I guess. What I meant to say, is that you don't need to pay high Nissan prices, unless you are going for a 100 point show car. You certainly do need a HIGH QUALITY part in this area. IMHO Moog provides as good quality for a more reasonable price. They are beefy and have the zerk fittings.
