This looks like a good opportunity to let you 1st gen owners (240Z's in particular) that SZM bought a 1973 240Z as a project car for the magazine. Starting in the Fall issue (there will be a mention in a sidebar (along with pictures) of the 280Z SC article in the Summer issue) there will be a regular multi-part article on taking a $650 dollar Z that could go in a few directions, ie: junkyard, parts car or restoration. We have decided to take this car and restore it to a nice daily driver. This is not meant to be a show car by any stretch, but more of a rescue of a 1st gen Z and what it takes to make it road worthy again.

Part 1 (Fall 2005 issue) of the project will be to do a visual inspection of every square inch of the car and to list all the plus' and minus' so that we know exactly what we are getting into and what will need to be done to make this a nice daily driver.

This project is not about making a high performance car (that will come later after the goal of making it a daily driver is acheived), but more of a how-to on taking a piece of coal and turning it into a cubic zirconia. if I said a diamond, it would be going to far since the intention is not to make a show car out of it.

Stay tuned, I've got a lot of work ahead of me.

PS: who ever gets the magazines, make sure to hold onto Falll 2002 (it is sold out), Winter 2001 and Spring 2002 (they are on the brink of selling out).

I have writen to the mag in the past about forgetting the early cars . I have been a subscriber form the first issue. I had decided to let the subscription laps because of my lack of interest in the past several issues. I could care less about the 350Z .And installing a blower on a 280 . Now if there going to do something of interest , I will continue to subscribe. Like I told them '' DONT FORGET THE GIRL THAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE PARTY '' Gary

Gary, sometimes it takes a while, but we do pay attention to what people have to say.

Keep in mind that no matter how much 240Z stuff we put in the magazine, it won't change the advertising part of it. There are only a handful of early Z aftermarket companies with the potential to advertise and we already have the major ones. There is not much of a market for regional shops since the magazine distributes all over the world. So advertising will always lean towards the 350Z making the mag look that much more 350Z heavy.

One of the main reasons we decided to get our own 240Z project car was because it is very hard to depend on outside sources (owners) to get early gen articles from. A lot goes into writing an article. You have to make sure to fully document everything which slows down the process. We have a few writers that can do this, but not enough to have something on the 240 on a regular basis. The project car will ensure that every issue from now on will have something for everyone.

Remember, this project is not about matching numbers, performance upgrades, or creating an award winning Z. It's about taking something from nothing and being able to drive it across the country without worrying about how far it is to the next exit with a gas station.

And just maybe, we'll learn something new along the way.

I'm with Gary regarding the mag. I let my subscription expire because there was very little on the early Z cars and what was provided was basically beginner stuff. I also contacted the magazine and made suggestions about possible coverage on club racing, auto-X, and such (pertaining to the early Zs)......but nothing but 350Z stuff and now G35 stuff!!!??? I see more stuff about the early Z car in the Grassroots mag! I guess if you are a total newbee to Zs, SportZ is a good choice...and if one associates a 350Z with the real Z cars. Beyond that, there's the pictures that have no explaination....are we supposed to just guess about there importance. And the woman always looking like she's working on a Z....come on, who is she? I guess the only reason I subscribed at all was because the mag happened to put a picture of my 240 in it, and without even asking permission to use my photo...what's up with that kind of business? Like I said, good NEWBEE mag and to much 350Z and now G35 stuff. Sorry Art, those are just my feelings and have nothing to do with the hard work you folks put into the mag. Wish you luck in the future.
