Adjustable cam gear for 280ZX/ and Turbo?

Recommended Posts

I found this website in my new Turbo Mag.

http://www.9secondracing.com/partnum/2654/parttype/19/partcat/20/HKS-Nissan-280ZX-Turbo-1981-83-(L28-Engine)-Adjustable-Cam-Gear.html

They say that HKS has an adjustable cam gear for the 280ZX and Turbo. I e-mailed them the other day and have not gotten a response back. I just wanted to bring it to the forums attention to see if it is truely possable or are they pulling our/ my leg.

Thanks

nobody is pulling your leg it definately looks real to me. You can get L-series adjustable cam gears from Japan too although they don't look as lovely as this item.

This one looks like it involves changing your whole cam drive assembly to a belt rather than a chain unless they just used a generic picture.

Gav, that is what I am thinking. They used a common picture to show you what it looks like. You wouldn't have a website that had specific L-series cam gear like the ones in Japan you are talking about?

Hls30, I can't see how to make 2 OEM cam gears do the same? That would have to take some time to figure out. I don't think I could do it myself, I'll have to ask around when I get back home.

Thanks-

Look at the photo in the link, you need two pieces that overlap and are offset to keep the position of the chain and the drive shaft the same. have the chain procket cut off on one, and the center cut out of the other one, have a "step" (to accomodate the offset) machined into each piece, and mating holes drilled (elongated in the piece holding the chain sprocket) and tapped.

That would give you an adjustable piece with factory fitament.

I know a picture would be better, but I can't find one of the OEM piece.

I have used a number of different makes of adjustable cam gears. Most work great. I have also built a few, and have one in the works right now. It takes a lot of machining, and would be too expensive to build one at a time to sell. But for my own use, my time is cheap. Unlike the stock gear which has three holes, seperated in four degree increments. Or the optional gear which has eight holes seperated in three degree increments, an adjustable gear can be set anywhere you want. When using an adjustable gear, you should use at least a 12 inch diameter degree wheel to do your timing. After all, your splitting hairs, so you need to be as accurate as you can. You also need to know a lot about your engine, cam, and how it will be used, for it to be worthwhile.
