Security Thread -- Everyone tell us what u have

Just thought I would start a security thread...Dr.Muffn got his rig stolen this last Saturday, and it would be a good thread to refresh everyone what to do to secure their z.

I am not very good at mine; it is parked wedged between 2 big rigs (I plan on putting it in a garage).

I currently use a club with the 4 key type lock, but on the original steering wheel, which I think anyone who really tried could just take off...I am going to be getting an aftermarket steering wheel, and try to find theft prevention screws to go along with my club.

It helps to have a crappy looking interior/exterior as well. But hopefully that isn't going to be like that forever.

After removing the gauges from the dash of my 240z I realized the car wouldn't start without the tach being plugged in. Now, whenever I leave my Z overnight I just unplug the tach behind the dash. Its easy, and takes 2 seconds once you know where to reach without looking.

I got worried when my Z mechanic took a Z key at random from his collection, and popped the hatch open by jiggling it!

on the 72 camaro i owned many moons ago i routed a kill switch from ground to the + side of the coil. routed the wire so it looked stock and buried the switch.

figured the worst i might find is a dead battery from overcranking. not the most elegant (i like the magnetic switch idea), but pretty simple and easy to do. hopefully just enough to make it enough of a pain in the arse to get the JOs to try another car.

i lay a 47 magnum on my dash :) The ORIGINAL security system!

I have always thought disabling the car in some way is good as long as it doesn't take you all day to do it, like removing the spark plugs or something that would take at least 6 minuets if you're fast and would require you to carry a few tools all the time. I just don't have that kind of time. I am looking into a battery kill switch, though. The key is to hide the wires and the switch so if the theif can pop the hood they can't trace the wires and jump start it. Because we have these clip-style distributors it is also easy and fast to remove the rotor from the dist. Although, if the theif tried to crank the engine too many time it could flood with that idea..............

A solution is to have stiffer car theift laws.

Rewire the cigarette lighter as a kill switch on either ignition or the fuel pump. Has to be pressed in (as if you were about to light a smoke) to start the car. When you park the car, put the lighter in your pocket.

If you actually use the lighter then this is not an option as it makes it will not function as a lighter any more.
