Hey all.

I'm a new owner of a 1971 240z. It's all there except the front and rear bumper and the inside grill behind the front bumper. It needs some TLC. and I still need to pick it up so I don't physically have it yet.

The problem is you have to push start it to get it running suposedly. They were telling me that it was the fly wheel teeth are bad and it just grinds. I am not sure on this the battery needs replaceing and I have not heard it run yet. I don't even know how many miles are on it. I just bought it for $600 bucks. They were just trying to get rid of it.

I've been wanting one a long time. Anyone have any ideas on my first diagnos of why it's not starting. It has a new starter and I will check the battery. Other than that once I pull the starter and the teeth look good then what. If their bad what is easier pulling the engine to replace the fly wheel or just the trainny. Any one have a good fly wheel if it's bad?

I think you're getting ahead of yourself here. I'd wait until you get the car before you start worrying about what might be wrong if the first things you try don't work out. I'd be surprised if the teeth were really ground off the flywheel. The starter has a centrifugal Bendix that engages the flywheel teeth only when the starter is spinning. If this is sticking then you'll just hear a high speed spinning sound. It's easy enough to pull the starter off and check all of this out.

make sure you have a clean title signed in your hands as well. But yeah, spend hours and hours on this website getting the hang of stuff...also do a search ---you can find a lot of info....

take off the starter and look at the flywheel...I've never heard of a flywheel getting wasted like that....more likely the starter is bad....

My Z had a couple of bad teeth from someone turning the key to start while the engine was running. Every once in a while when I would go to start the engine it would clash gears. I ended up pulling the engine and trans as a unit. I wanted to redo the engine bay and repaint . Other wise just pull the trans . I would think about replacing the clutch and pressure plate and throwout bearing as well as the pilot bearing at the same time. This way you wont be back doing it in the near future. What Mike W said about the starter is true , it could just be the spring. By the way Welcome to the club . Gary

if it's a stuck solenoid, sometimes you can jar it by tapping the solenoid with a hammer. not too hard, just enough to break it free. this will allow it to extend the gear and engage the flywheel.

however, being in ca. you should be able to find one in the junkyard.

I live in City Heights area, Marlborough and University.

Yeah I have never heard of the teeth on the fly wheel being so bad it won't start. I am thinking it is a electrical problem. The wires at the steering colmn are all hacked up. Are there any diagrams of the wiring harness on the web?

I am curious ar 240Z parts in General expensive? I have a 67 Bronco and there are a lot of thing you can convert from the junk yard or spend thousands and thousands of dollors if you order all the stuff from catologs. There's a big price increase.

^it's the same way. you can source tons o' parts from junkyards or you can order all new parts... i live in mira mesa, btw....

Mate, ... if you've got a problem, check out the tech threads. there's more info there than you're likely to need.

I agree with the general consensus. I'd check out the starter first.
