Ignition Switch question

Recommended Posts

Just brought the "new" home. 72 240 all original except for the wheels. Bought from the classifieds here. The car has no power to the fuse labeled ignition. If you bridge from the next fuse labeled flasher power will go to the ignition switch. With tester voltage always present to the flasher.

Any ideas what to check next. Once the car is started everything guages ect work.

A bit puzzling... :o

Some more on the problem. I cleaned the contacts for the alternator which is also not charging. Also cleaned the contacts for the voltage regulator. All electrical works while the car is running I.e signals, heater blower a/c which actually blows cold, radio...8 track, ect. When I turn on the head lights it kills the car.

I am thinking maybe it is all tied in cause the red and white wire I am shorting across at the fuse panel I believe is the same one at the alternator.

Any help appreciated.

Boy its nice to have a z again. My 4 year son old thinks its cool too.

Everything you've described makes me think you may have a car which has the fusible links blown. Try a heavy guage (6-8) cable from your alternator to the battery. If everything looks like it's working, I'd think you've found that the FL's are bad. If not, look for any wiring that seems to have been changed or modified. Welcome back to the wonderful world of Classic Z's. :knockedou
