WTD: Suspension Strut Protective Rubber Boots

Recommended Posts

I posted this in the new classifieds section on the website but it's had a whole 1 view since the 9th of May.

http://www.classiczcars.com/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=334&sort=1&cat=5&page=1

I'm after the rubber boots that go over the shock absorber and inside the actual spring. They are a simple boot designed to proctect the shocker from Dirt/Dust/Water etc..

I believe they were not on the 240z as standard and possibly first made there way on to the late 260z's and 280z. Does anyone know where I can find them either brand new or second hand?

I've been quoted $200 AUD for a set here and think it's a bit steep.

Gav240z,

I got mine under a year ago from MSA, genuine Nissan ones, I can't remember the price or the part number. I can look if you want?

Just for your info, the rubber boot slips on the rim of the top spring plate, and on the bottom there is a metal clip that holds the boot to the strut. I would think you would need this clip too.

Cheers

Ian

Yes I was told by someone else about the clips thanks all the same.

If you could find out the price and part no. I'd really appreciate it I had a look at their online store but I couldn't find them there.

I also tried looking on too intense restoration but no luck either.

I'm pretty sure i saw it on a website when i was actually looking for the suspension but I can't remember which one.

Cheers,

I've got a pair of genuine Nissan boots the PO gave me with the car. Sorry Gav I can't give you the boots but can give you the part #

Wow $200 sounds pricey, particularly when it won't make you go any faster and you never see them.

How bout trying aftermarket MX fork gaters?

Yeah $200 is very pricey I thought especially since I picked up the Tokico Illuminas for $350 AUD to my door.

Thanks for the part number I'm sure it would help. I don't suppose it came with the clips? LOL knowing car manufacturers i doubt it.

Aftermarket Fork Gaters??? I'm not familiar with this is it a place? a company?

No clips in the bags, you're right they expect you to retain the old ones.

Fork gaters are the rubber dust boots that cover the front suspension forks on a dirt bike, its only a guess but the nissan boots look similar to the ones I fitted on my XR 600 a long time ago, maybe $40 a pair?

Will the 280Z shock boots work? I'm guessing that's what you want because as far as I don't know they weren't original to the 280Z. If so take a look at your neighborhood auto parts store or the big online part stores in Aus. They probably have them for the 280Z (oops 260Z for you). Here's the one available from rockauto.com.

Good luck

Michael

edit: the price was around $11 each or pair not sure which. The picture may not be the exact one but the application I checked was '78 280Z. If you can't get their parts catalog to work properly click on the link to the non-java version at the bottom of the page. Well anyway here's a link: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/catalog.php

They are original to at least the later 280Z's. I would expect they would work fine on 240's as well, although I have never tried. I bought 4 from Chloe quite a while back that I am now installing on my 280Z. Victoria British has them in their catalog, but they are very pricy. At least $200 for the set. And the circlips at the bottom are NLA. Even Chloe couldn't find them for me back the day.

The aftermarket sounds pretty good if you can find something to fit :).

Edit: VB 2005 Winter catalog, pages 90-91, part 62-368. Lists the same part for front and rear, and lists 70-78 as the application. The bottom clips are not listed as available. The price is $49.95.

Thanks guys much appreciate the help. I have an older version of the Vic British Catalogue and it's got the KYB Strut Boot it says it fits all shockers.

They have them listed at $14.95 says reqd(2) does anyone think this means 2 for $14.95 or only sold as pair for like $30?

Either way it's alot better than the other price I was quoted.

Looks like mperdue your link to the shop was even cheaper.

Curious though 1 thing about these KYB boots.

I'll give a quick quote from VB.

"KYB Strut Boot and Bump Stops are bonded together forming a tightly sealed integral unit. Bottom collar of boot attaches to top of strut body, sealing piston rod from dust and moisture. Designed to fit all strut and shock types"

Now when they say bump stops I'm confused what exactly do they mean by this and how does this form part of the rubber?

Apart from that great I've saved some money already by the looks of things just by shopping around.

Cheers guys really appreciate the help it is what makes this place so great.

Gavin.

Current VB Catalog lists them for $19.95 and indicates 2 needed for FRONT and 2 needed for REAR. IMO that means the price is for EACH unit. Thus 4 @ $19.95ea is what you need. For a 240Z the P/N is #62-927

Also, I'd bet that you'll have to modify the existing OEM bumpstops or remove them to use these, since they have a bumpstop built in to the top of the boot.

Yeah gav the bumpstop is just an insulator that keeps the top of the strut body from goign all the way up and hitting the underside of the top spring mount. It lets it softly bottom out instead of getting metal to metal slamming together. Not a bad idea to build that into the boot in my opinion.
