megasquirt system is it worth it?

ive been looking at the megasquirt fuel injection system for my z.

its in kit form so you have to build and tune the system.

Also a LED Duty Cycle Meter for Fuel Injected Cars

Automatically operate an extra fuel injector or fuel pump etc, when your fuel injector duty cycle reaches a preset level.

Being someone who believes that the only proper way to tune fuel delivery is on a dyno, I'd suggest you should consider who is going to do that. In this country we have heaps of aftermarket ECU's that will do whatever you want, don't forget the ignition aspect which really should be tuned in conjunction with fuel.

Then again IMHO any fairly decent fuel injection system is better than carburettors.

If you have someone local that can remap stock nissan ECUs, I'd be adapting a R32 RB20 item. They're cheap as chips and have so many more features and more tunability than most ECUs on the market that it just aint funny.

Unfortunately there aren't too many people that do them.

A few of my mates have been reprogramming them for a while now with excellent results.

I have just acquired one, based on price and what it will do.

I am building an upgraded 280 L6. The stock fuel injection would have to be fudged through a resister reostat on the temp comtrol in order to provide appropriate enrichening for the header and other changes. You would then still have the problem of the restrictive AFM.

I like the idea of being able to reprogram the fuel curve and utilize an o2 sensor.

I think the Megasqirt system is great from the point of view that you can do all your own mapping from a laptop at home or in real time while driving the car.

For money spent you get a great project or you can spend more and get a pre-assembled one.

What better way is there to learn something, than doing it yourself. If you get stuck along the way the forums are there to help you through.

Yes you can get stock ECU's re-mapped and coded, but you can't do it from home & you can only do it to best guess unless you find someone who has a lot of experience on these ECU's.

Megasquirt is worth every penny in my opinion.

i think my friend (michael) is converting it to using a MAP sensor.... at any rate, there are several maps out there that are available to test, but i agree; there is no better way to tune than to do it yourself and match parts with custom programming

Still don't see how you can properly tune anything without a dyno.

A car can drive well and seem to have good power yet put it on the dyno with a air/fuel ratio check all the way and it can be found to be way out. Which can be absolutely crucial, particularly with a hi-po engine, even more so with a turbo.

BTW,an O2 sensor facility is only required for some fine tuning aimed at reducing emissions at low engine speeds. Thats it, superflous otherwise.

Richard, I agree about the use of a Dyno for fine tuning.

Not everyone has the money for this, and the same could be said for carbie setups.

Megasquirt is an economical F.I. system that can be tuned to your car by trial and error (not too much error) with a laptop computer in real time.

Once this is done, then go to a dyno and fine tune.

It's a good system and an inexpensive way to ditch carbies or to give yourself the abillity to change ecu settings on the spot, which you can't do with the standard Nissan ecu.

How do you envisage mounting this.

For instance, do you want to change over to a FI Manifold or convert some[?] Throttle bodies?

Which would be the best method of injection, sequential or mass?

Seems like a very good system, like to learn more...

Mike,

At the moment Megasquirt can not do sequential injection, we have to wait for UltraMegasquirt.

I recomend the reading of this F.I. system to anyone who has the inclination to do this change from carbs.

Don't think that we are in disagreement then Alan, as long as people recognise the limitations. I just don't want to see people waste their expensive engines by trying to save money that is well spent. And quality dyno time is always well spent.

BTW, can anyone explain this apparent US fixation with O2 sensors? Its bulls*it for a hi-po engine, absolute bulls*it :)
