megasquirt system is it worth it?

Recommended Posts

I believe we are in agreement Richard, about the fuel injection, but i'll agree to disagree about the dyno time for the average person who just wants to get rid of their carbs, in favour of fuel injection.

The fixation on O2 sensors I can't explain. When first setting up Volumetric Efficiency tables it can be quite handy as a referrence but that's about it.

Maybe in the states they use it as a shortcut to change injector timings in the ecu, just means you don't have to be as accurate with your tables.

Alan.

Yes you can get stock ECU's re-mapped and coded, but you can't do it from home & you can only do it to best guess unless you find someone who has a lot of experience on these ECU's.

You're quite right, it does totally depend on having all the gear required to do it real time (which we do now). We have found though that after spending some time to get a feel for the system, that you can quite acurately predict the actual AFR from the theoretical AFR in ROM Editor.

Still don't see how you can properly tune anything without a dyno.

A car can drive well and seem to have good power yet put it on the dyno with a air/fuel ratio check all the way and it can be found to be way out. Which can be absolutely crucial, particularly with a hi-po engine, even more so with a turbo.

I think this really depends on power levels. You can do a pretty good job of it on the street with some patience. We are finding though that we can't safely tune our guinea-pig (R32, RB20DET, big ITS turbo, ~20psi) on the street anymore. You just can't hold it at a given load point on the brakes anymore....unless you're going VERY fast. So that'll be seeing the dyno soon.

(Just in case you're wondering, we're using about $4k worth of ARF meter, not something cheap)
