Replacing bolts......

Recommended Posts

I'm getting ready to swap enignes in my 73.

I'm trying to plan so I can do it over a weekend.

I will pull the engine and trans, then swap the trans to new motor, replacing clutch and throughout bearing in the process. Then it goes back in.

the car is in good shape but has not been apart since new.

I hear its a good idea to replace bolts (i am replacing motor and trans mounts).

My question, and I have tried to find it in searches,

What bolts will I run into and how can i find the dimensions in advance so I can order them?

I live in the boonies, so I can't walk down the street and get them.

Thanks guys ROFL

Your best bet is buy the Club's PArts CD and buy them direct from a Nissan Dealer, or Courtesy Nissan: http://www.courtesynissan.com/en_US/HomePage_1.chtml

As long as the engine is out, you should also replace the tranny pilot bushing.

It's also a good time to get there and scrub out and fix anything in the engine bay that needs attention.

Ty guys

Marty espcially-- I forgot about the pilot bushing!!!! I have the throwout bearing but not the bushing.

I'm tempted to use the old bolts, but have been advised I would be crazy to do so.

great help here

I agree with Carl, there is no reason you couldn't re-use the old bolts. As long as they aren't rusted or deformed.

If any, the only bolts you might want to replace are the flywheel bolts. But I've re-used those many times without any problems.

I bought a cheep tap and die set from harbor freight to find bolt sizes with, and to chase the treads-it came with a thread guide that has really been helpful(the tap and die set in far from all inclusive.) Maybe the size and thread info should go in a chart in the archives...

If you were advised to do engine swap while naked, and smothered in strawberry jam would you do it?

Only in your garage big boy!

Some hot female member in Carls' neck of the woods needs to check out his garage, and forget that never kiss and tell crap... Bill Ramsey needs some help with his bolt, and probably a nut or two!! Come on Guys-you know his car(among other things) is rusty...

Let's not forget to show our friends across the pond that O2 sensors are not the only things we are fascinated with!

That said, I am reusing the hardware that cleans up pretty, and saving the ugly but not rusty ones for mockup use(I am setting up my drive train in a '73 that could use paint, to keep the scarrs off the bodywork I am working so hard on(Ok, I am still stripping the removeable panels-I still don't want more body work to do, or to have to wait to do it.)
