I dismantled the speedo drive on the side of the gearbox to fix the oil leaking out of it and put it back together - then nothing - speedo no work anymore

I have since pulled it apart 3 times thinking that the cable was not engaging into the back of the speedo. Still no work!

Yesterday, I took out the drive from the gearbox and felt the cable engage into the back of the speedo (thought I did anyway) but still no work.

I have checked the cable and it is in one piece, the teeth on the drive look ok. Is there anything else I should be looking for????

Last summer when I replaced my 4 speed tranny with a 5 speed one, I pulled out that cable at least 10 times and reinstalled it. When I finally did use it, it worked just fine....and just put it back in, I regard it as kinda like putting a cable tv line into a vcr or tv....not very hard to do, so your problem is very strange imo.
