Posted May 31, 200519 yr comment_125794 Ive been really busy lately and I havent had much time to spend on the z. I just want it to be finished so I can go drive it. I cant wait until its done. It tortures me every time I go in the garage and see her just sitting there. To make me even more excited let me know what you love about your z. May 31, 200519 yr comment_125798 i know what you mean, dude. mine hasn't hit pavement since i bought it in 11/04. been doing work on the stupid things and have barely touched the suspension yet. being in nj i figure i have to get all the carb/emissions crap in line for our PITA inspection before i even register her.you have to admit tho, it does look great in the garage and allows you to imagine what it will look and feel like on the road. we definitely don't see many out here. i can't wait to pound some ricers!!!i passed a parked 280z by my house and it took all of my will power to stop myself from knocking on all the doors on the block to find the owner.where in central nj are you?we might be able to compare notes.bart Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16098-i-cant-wait-till-its-done/#findComment-125798 Share on other sites

May 31, 200519 yr comment_125804 have you torn yours up yet, or is it basically still intact? i need to see some stupid things, like the bumper attachments, since my PO changed some things (he apparently mixed '71 and '72 parts).thanks bart Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16098-i-cant-wait-till-its-done/#findComment-125804 Share on other sites

May 31, 200519 yr comment_125806 I just purchased a 1972 datsun 240z with 50k original miles no more than one week ago. When i purchased the car nothing worked... Hell it wouldnt even turn over. From then till now i managed to get it running, starting, stopping and even most of the lights working! Since this is a New England car it will not be an easy resto due to all the rust. The body seems to be in decent shape, however the floor boards dont hold more than 1 pound. Right now the interior is out of the car with the exception of the driver seat, dash and shifter ( all u need to move it). Since i did get it running and installed alot of new ignition parts i now have to tackle the body. Once the body is done and ready to be painted i plan to get the engine running a bit smoother. Its a big project but for some reason it seems to be moving very fast. I plan to get photos as soon as possible, but for now i just figured i would post something on my new prized posession Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16098-i-cant-wait-till-its-done/#findComment-125806 Share on other sites
May 31, 200519 yr comment_125808 Had to stop work on my 72 desert survivor for a while - bought a house. Bought it for $700 no major dents no rust had been sitting for don't know how many years. All original (except interior which I ripped out) with dealer installed AC - even all the smog stuff on it. Replaced all hoses, belts, battery, all fluids, alternator, radiator, points, condensers, cap & rotor. Adjusted the valves and carbs and it runs pretty good. Next is windshield, headliner and interior and body work on the "beer can" roof. I've never driven it! AAAAGGGGHHH. Also just picked up a 4/70 car... #3486 in about the same condition (400 bucks - sitting in a storage yard for 10 years!). Just put a car cover on it and forcing myself to finish the 72 before starting on that one... June 1, 200519 yr comment_125814 congrats dude. yah i replaced pretty much the whole ignition (distributor cap, rotor, points, condenser, coil, etc) on my datsun the first 2 days i got it. This is my first Z ever to restore and its such and easy car to work on i love it. I managed to get the carbs balanced and all that good stuff but it runs a little choppy, possibly because it needs some exhaust work. Overall the car isnt as bad as i thought it would be. In as in condition if i fixed the exhaust and E-brake it would pass inspection, but i think il wait on that =P. I took it for a quick drive around my neighborhood, and damn, these cars are quick. Have fun restoring ur Z's and ill be posting periodically on this site, its been my best source yet. June 1, 200519 yr comment_125818 one thing i can definitely recommend is the petronix upgrade to replace the points and condenser. for about $70 you basically never worry about points adjustment again. i love working on this old beauty but i still remember what a pain points were. June 1, 200519 yr comment_125840 At least you guys can work on your cars, I've been working overseas the last 20 months. When I get home in july I've gotta give my baby a lot of a TLC before starting her up and taking her out (at least a day in the garage anyway). June 1, 200519 yr comment_125857 I finally got the combo I wanted in terms of a rust free shell, exterior color, and engine and suspension upgrades. I too put it in storage for 2-1/2 years and will be re-united with it on 12 July. What I love about my Z is its styling, performance, its fun to drive, and my wife despises the thought of driving, riding in it, or letting me take the kids anywhere in it, leaving it all to me to enjoy.
