Posted June 3, 200519 yr comment_126142 The top surface of the rear bumper on my 280Z looks like it's got some paint overspray on it, but at close inspection, it's really very small pitting? can you polish that out or something? thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16136-polishing-rear-bumper/ Share on other sites

June 3, 200519 yr Author comment_126145 I saw a buff ball (made of sponge???) at the Murrays. It looks like it would last about 2 minutes, but it was $24!!?? Is that right? I thought a buff ball was made of better 'cloth' stuff.Local K-Mart had Never-dull. I'll go get some, thx. Maybe I could rig up a thing to go on the drill. Door sill plates need help too. Maybe other stuff... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16136-polishing-rear-bumper/#findComment-126145 Share on other sites
June 12, 200519 yr Author comment_127157 SJGREEN71-I tried some NevrDull on the bumper and it didn't do diddly. the AL polish did some cleaning, but the underlying chrome is still (old). I concluded that the Nevr Dull is for maintenence or light polishing only, being just a soft cloth soaked with a petroleum product for lubrication. I'd take the can of NevrDull to a show to touch up or a quick shine. Just pull off a bit & rub. No second rag needed. If you have something with a heavy layer of (patina), then you'll need something like a paste or a chemical. I used Eagle One Aluminum paste polish on the 280ZX wheels, and it shined those up really fast. I just gotta get into the nooks by the air valve to get it clean too.thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16136-polishing-rear-bumper/#findComment-127157 Share on other sites
June 12, 200519 yr comment_127175 If your chrome is damaged, (i.e. pitting) then the only way to fix it is re-chrome it. Nothing will take those out. Sorry...but hey! Gives you a reason to re-chrome it and think how good it will look! June 12, 200519 yr comment_127177 My friend told me that he saw polishing chrome on "Myth busters", using Coca Cola rubbed on with al-foil. Kinda weird I know, but if you're going to fork out to get it rechromed you might as well try that before you do. If it stuffs up there's no great loss. June 12, 200519 yr comment_127181 Autosol is very good, protects as well. Use just a tiny amount, I've had a tube of it for years. But if the chrome is buggered................ June 12, 200519 yr comment_127203 As Aaron said, If the chome is pitted, you'll only polish off the chrome you have left! Although you can get bare steel to shine, it doesn't last very long Exhaust gases builds a very tough patina. I cut this off from my new chrome with "Mothers" brand "Paint Cleaner". It works better than any polish I've used to date. June 13, 200519 yr comment_127255 I saw a rear bumper on ebay just this week. It looked very nice and rechromed but it was for a 60-72 240z might look funny having odd bumpers on a 280z. June 13, 200519 yr comment_127287 As Alfadog said, I've also heard of the use of Coca Cola rubbed on with alfoil. Could be a myth but what have you got to lose ??????????????? You could always try Brasso and cardboard. June 28, 200519 yr comment_128879 well, steal wool will clean it up, use brasso as a lube. This will actually further damage the surface, although it will look better.HOWEVER, it will rust up/deteriorate when exposed to moisture. Face it, if pitted, the chrome is gone. time to have a redo for the long term Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16136-polishing-rear-bumper/#findComment-128879 Share on other sites
