The shop wants about $168.00 to check and recharge my Z32 ( 280 is cool as ever) system which cools to about 75 degrees. Sounds like alot to me, in autozone I saw those cans for $14.00 which you can recharge yourself but sounds too easy of a fix or too good to be true. Add ac to the list of things "I know nothing about".

I had an ’86 Mazda B2200 truck with a R12 system, which was pretty much empty. I bought one of those R12 to R134a conversion kits at my local Kragen and charged it myself. After a year it was still blowing cold. There’s nothing wrong with the DIY kit as long as you don’t overcharge your system.

Too much IMHO. My local shop (good but pricey) only charges $9.99 for a leak check. If it's got some R-134a in the system, ask em how much for a leak test before you agree to anything.
