Flowmaster 40 series Question

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have a question for those of you out there that are using a 40 series flowmaster muffler. I am going to be installing this muffler on my car (an otherwise stock '78 280Z) and was wondering whether or not you should keep the stock pre-muffler when using this muffler. Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I really dont know much about the pre-muffler or how it would affect an aftermarket exhaust.

Thanks, Derek.

Good question Derek. I have one of these in a box ready to install. I am wondering the same thing. How much noise will this thing make? I have a 2 1/2" system with headers. I do not want to sound like a Honda!

if you take the pre-muffler out, it will more than likely sound like a honda. My advice is first have the flowmaster installed and see how you like it, then if its not what you are looking for, have the premuffler removed.

Thought I'd share my experience. When I put the L28 (all stock) into my 73 I upgraded to the MSA 6:1 header and their 2 1/2" exhaust with Dynomax muffler. I found I loved the sound, but it really was too loud to drive where I live. So I put an 18" glass pack in just before the bend over the rear half shaft and the results were a really good comprimise.

Later I upgraded my cam to a mild performance cam. The result is noticeably less exhaust note at low/mid revs, and it doesn't have the "warm" tone it used to. It's not bad, but if I were to do it again, I would have put a shorter glass pack in.

My point is that it really helps if you know where you plan to end up with your mods so you can (hopefully) get it right the first time. :)

i had a flowmaster 40 series on a l28/e88 with msa headers 6 in to 1 with and without a resonator and also with and without an inline muffler. the 40 series went on because i love the look and because it was 30 years old and given to me be a once avid racer. my car was never more loud and was a menace to some and a embarassment to myself. the flowmaster acted as a echo chamber when it was behind the others listed above and the car was quieter withouy it on the car. so for my sound preference, the 40 series is good for a wheel chuck on a street car mabey a qualifying part for raceing but not much else.

i now have a 14 inch pc of stainless from the headers to a 45 inch/ 3 inch in diameter glasspac topped off by a summit brand "dynomax" polished stainless steele 16inch muffler. and she sounds better than ever.

now, i do not expect you to believe i have a 45 inch glasspac.

but it is true.

also there is no possible way to know what your car will sound like untill each combination is on the car and running.

good luck, i averaged 1 new exhaust per year untill i found what i like.

Does anyone out there have a sound clip of a reasonably tuned or stock Z with just a turbo muffler or a turbo muffler with a glasspack? I've heard alot exhaust mp3 clips of people's exotic setups (3.1 liter motors, dual exhausts, twice pipes, turbos, huge cam+carb setups etc.) but not much in the way of stock or reasonably close to stock Z's with just a turbo muffler, or a turbo muffler and a glasspack.

Thanks, Derek.
