Page 14 of Wick Humble's "How to Restore Your Datsun Z-Car" states "I can't disagree that hand-rubbed lacquer gives a deeper luster than the original synthetic-enamel finish, for instance."

Page 54 states "The alkyd enamel Datsun put on my 240Z is a synthetic enamel."

Page 60 under "Z-Car Exterior Colors" reads----"Original alkyd enamels may not be available in these colors and may be matched by color chip."

Not disputing your color code label, but that is where I read it.

It MAY be possible that different colors used different types of paint, but (no offense) I'll believe Nissan before I believe a non-Nissan source. Between Nissan and an outsider, who should know better what Nissan used?

Ah, yes... you are suffering from a very common problem most digital camera owners see. Your camera takes pictures that are much higher quality than we can support. To post them on our website, you need to scale them down (resize).

Check out this post I did about image sizes and formats. Simply put, if your pictures were smaller, you could upload them. There are a few good tools listed but I suggest that you use the Windows XP Power Toy for resizing images... it does an excellent job and it's easy.

You might want to check the bump stops on the front & rear struts. If they are deteriorated or gone that would contribute to a pretty good jolt when you hit a bump in the road. If the "clunk" comes from the rear of the car it could be a bad differential mount. It would probably be wise to check the engine mounts and transmission mount, too, as the rubber can come loose from the metal part of the mount.

I'm trying to figure out what you guys are debating.. Are you trying to figure out if Nissan used ACRYL or ALKYD enamels for stock paint?

Zup's info is coming from Wike's book and Carl's info is coming from a sticker on his car. And, if I were to pick... Wike's book would be my choice. No offense Carl, but, unless you owned that car since it was new the sticker could have been put on there at a later date.

Before this gets into a head-butting game, why don't you guys look it up? Sounds like a perfect opportunity for a tech article to me!!

I have not had time to figure out the photo post yet.... will get to soon.

The Z went to my mechanic this week. His report is that this is a "straight" car with zero rust.

As for the suspension noise, he reports everything is in very good condition and he would not change anything. He commented that the struts could be changed but in his opinion not worth the $. He suggests looking at again next year.

Interesting thing I have noticed is that the more I drive the car, the better it sounds and runs. I am truly a kid with a new toy! My family however thinks I am crazy.....

I do much appreciate the comments from everyone and as I own this car longer, I am sure I will have more questions. GlennH

Okay so I read all the posts in this thread and the paint deal got me thinking. So I went down and took a pic of my paint sticker. As you can see it says "Acryl". Now I have read Humble's book cover to cover many times and there's an old saying out there---"Don't believe everything you read". I am the second owner of my Z. The original owner is a friend of mine. He assures me that the paint sticker has been on the car since he drove it off the lot in Omaha Nebraska in 1973. The car has never been wrecked and I certainly believe that Nissan knows better than Wick Humble. No offense to him but mistakes happen. Maybe Nissan meant something else when they had "Acryl" put on the stickers, but seeing 5,980 matches for that term on google tells me Nissan knew what they were doing.

Maybe the terminology changed along the way, who knows. I just know we shouldn't be telling a member that the sticker on his car is bogus and that he should believe a paint and body man before FACTORY applied decals.

Anybody care to look up the code for 901 in 73??????
