ZSaint Posted June 19, 2005 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2005 I have a Centerforce II pressure plate and disc. I have a 240 clutch arm, t/o bearing and slave cylinder. All of these items will be in a 83 Maxima 5-speed tranny with a stock steel flywheel. I have both collars available: 240 and 280Z. Which t/o collar works with the Centerforce II clutch? I need someone who has installed one of these clutches and KNOWS the correct info, please! Which throwout bearing do I use?
e_racer1999 Posted June 19, 2005 Share #2 Posted June 19, 2005 you need to have the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout collar from the same car/tranny. sooooo...... you will need the t/o collar to match the application of the clutch kit. Bambikiller240 Posted June 19, 2005 Share #3 Posted June 19, 2005 As I told you before, the 280Z collar is what is specified in the Motorsport Auto catalog for use with the Centerforce II and for the Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch kits installed in 1970-74 240/260Z.http://www.zcarparts.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=PCC02
ZSaint Posted June 19, 2005 Author Share #4 Posted June 19, 2005 I am just trying to confirm this information. I looked in the Motorsport catalog and it states that "the 70-74 Centerforce II clutch utilizes the 280 t/o bearing collar". Thank you for the info. This is the first time I have seen this in writing. I will press a new bearing onto the 280 collar and put it in. I work by myself so I really do not want to have to do this again. I have many projects and I only want to do them ONCE!
ZSaint Posted June 25, 2005 Author Share #5 Posted June 25, 2005 I pulled both bearings off the collars and cleaned them up a month ago. One is shorter than the other. Which one is which? I cannot tell which collar I should use (dummy!). I have the stock 240Z 4-speed T/O bearing collar and a 280Z T/O bearing collar. If I were to guess, I would say the 280 is the shorter collar. Can someone confirm this, please? :surprised
e_racer1999 Posted June 25, 2005 Share #6 Posted June 25, 2005 i believe the 240 is the longer collar, so you would be correct.... as long as i am.....

mlc240z Posted June 25, 2005 Share #8 Posted June 25, 2005 this might help, but i don't know if it's a definitive guide.http://www.zparts.com/zptech/articles/trans_swap%20parts/4tobear_specs1.html
ZSaint Posted June 27, 2005 Author Share #9 Posted June 27, 2005 I have a 2/71 240Z stock 4-speed. Is this an "A" or a "B" 4-speed? I am installing a 83 Maxima 5-speed. Is this and 'A' or a 'B' 5-speed? These things confuse the heck out of me!
e_racer1999 Posted June 27, 2005 Share #10 Posted June 27, 2005 the 2/71 would be a type b.... the 5-speed should be universal..... i think....
ZSaint Posted June 28, 2005 Author Share #11 Posted June 28, 2005 Great news! I now have it solved... I need to put in the shorter collar that I have. It came out of a 260-280Z. I will dummy it up on the floor to make certain the clutch arm is perpedicular to the tranny. I am certain it will be OK now that I have resolved which collar is which. A little bit of extra work on the shop floor is OK when you consider the work involved in taking the engine out to make this adjustment.
Marty Rogan Posted June 28, 2005 Share #12 Posted June 28, 2005 ZSaint,I just put a '78 5 spd and Centerforce II clutch in my 71 last weekend. The Centerforce needs the 280Z collar, which is the LONGER one. I also used the 280 clutch fork, so I could use an automatically adjusting slave.Marty
