Blast Cabinet Question

To help remove moisture you can run the compressed air in a long metal pipe(s) from the compressor around the garage and at a slight downward incline with a water drain or trap at the end/bottom where you want to hook up the compressor. This air will cool in the pipe and the water will condense on the walls and drip down to the trap. Use larger pipe to minimize pressure loss. Have fun with the cabinet. I did all of my parts in one and with the right material, nozzle and pressure it make rust and paint clean up a breeze.

Ok, I work with my cabinet a bit more today and am thinking that a shop vac is a good idea. :cross-eye Too hard to see with out one.

Will, I'm also waiting on that pic you mentioned of how you did the light so I can get a light in there also.

I have a question for you guys/gals that are using a shop vac with the blast cabinet. What do you do with the contents in the vac after using it with the blast cabinet? Can you reuse the media?

I left the camera at the other house-I'll pick it up tomorrow and post the pictures of the whole thing-I use the same situation Michael suggests.

Rob, if you clean the shopvac before you start using it with the blast cabinet, then you can just dump it back in. If you have appropriate baffles set up, the shopvac will usually take only the airborn dust out of the cabinet-depending on what direction you are blasting.

One very serious warning!!!

The dust WILL clog up the filter media used in the shopvac. If you do not clean the filters early and often, you will burnup the motor, and worse yet, rupture the media causing all of the collected dust to come right back into the air you breathe-sillicosis is no joke, and it is easy to ignore dusty air when you are caught up in discovering the beauty under the flaking paint and rust-my long illness toward the later part of last year and extending through the early part of this year was lengthened by this very situation. Now I wear a dust mask even when using the cabinet. Take no chances when it comes to your health and safety.

I'd like to clarify, if I may for myself and other people as thick in the head as I can sometimes be, and please correct me if I'm wrong. You're talking about the shop vac PAPER filter, and not just the foam filter, correct?

Picked up the same cabinet as you from HF today and all is well. Also got the short hose you mentioned, glass beads, and a water trap. Put it on top of my cart and it's ready to go. Hope to have time to work with it a bit tomorrow. Thanks for all the info. :laugh:

Both, the paper filter will tear if it gets too clogged, the foam filter can actually melt when it gets clogged-the moving air cools the motor, a clogged filter stops or limits the movemnet of the air meaning the heat will build up. Air will take the path of least resistance, meaning less filtering-meaning more dust dumped into the air you are breathing-unless you vent the shopvac to the outside!

I'll get some pictures of the clogged paper filter to post tomorrow-it is what I have been using, and it is time to clean it!

I have a cabinet from HF as well, the gun has gone bad twice, so I replaced it with a husky prtable unit for 12 bucks, what an improvement! As for light I driiled a 1/2" hole on the angle portion just before the flrat roof, and stuck a ceramic light socket through. I then used some putty epoxy on the outsideto hold the socket in place and seal the cabimet. I use a 1000 watt spot light and it works great!! The florecent one that come with it is a joke.
