Posted June 20, 200519 yr comment_127887 I went out and bought a Crane XR3000 ignition and the PS91 Coil to go with it about a year ago and just now got to put it in :paranoid: I did a lot of research AFTER I bought it and was concerned about the performance of it and being able to use the stock tach. Well...after following the fairly easy to use instructions, it started right up and strange of all my tach works just like it did before install. I am working on a write up of how I did it with photo's to help anyone else. What I found that didn't make sense to me was they had me keep the black/white wire and green/white wire attached to the ballast resistor, but put a jumper wire across the ballast resistor :surprised I don't know??? All I have to do now is verify the timing and all should be good to go (I hope) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16307-crane-ignitionit-lives/ Share on other sites
June 20, 200519 yr comment_127895 The jumper across the ballast resistor takes it out of the system without having to remove it from the car.I'm fitting the same to my car so i'm glasd to hear that the tach works. June 20, 200519 yr Author comment_127896 I thought of that as well but why didn't they just have you take it out? Maybe by leaving everything still connected to it and jumpering across it allows the tach to still function as normal. June 20, 200519 yr comment_127937 dhoneycutt, what dist are you using with the setup? the 280zx dist?Let us know how it makes your car behave (I assume much better!)....please do a tech write up. June 20, 200519 yr comment_127963 I installed the same system on my 240 last fall. The tach worked for a while, then died. So keep an eye out for that. I just swapped a 280 Tach in and problem solved. The performance is great compared to the points dist. Dogma420The XR3000 system comes with a optical sensor to replace your points breaker plate. I do think you could use it with a ZX dist though. June 21, 200519 yr Author comment_128023 dogma420...I am using the stock 240 dizzy. You can use it with the 280zx dizzy according to their instructions. As soon as I get a chance to get out and drive it I will let you know how it works. I just want to verify timing etc. before I go too far from home  I've never written anything up as far as proceedures go so this is a first for me. Hopefully it will be easy to follow. I just need to figure out how to post it when I am done with it.jmanz6...I have heard that before and am just hoping that it won't happen to me...(yea I know wishful thinking on my part) I do have a spare tach and would probably just go for their tach adapter. We shall see. How much are the 280 tachs going for? June 21, 200519 yr comment_128025 I got my 280 tach off ebay for like $20. I pulled the guts out and swapped them with my 240 tach case. Otherwise it wouldn't fit back in the hole right. The 280 case has a hole at the bottom of the plastic and the tab on the back is in the wrong place. The insides swap very easily and it only takes a few minutes. I am going to switch to an electronic dizzy I have that has a built in pick up. I'm not 100% sure I got mine right in my 240 dizzy. I also think my timing chain is stretched since I can't seem to get the timing to hold steady.
