My 240z car is a 71 and it runs but me and my step dad want to convert the 2 carborater in to a single 4 barrel and has anyone done that and if so how and what tools. Also my interior will be reaplaced so will the carpet but besides the carpet and interior it needs a new stero and it has surface rust

welcome andrea!

you will get varied opinions on this site with the carburetor issue.... i personally prefer the dual SU carbs (as do most of the people on this forum) but you may have specific issue regarding the carbs, which may be why you are replacing them. there are kits available to do the 4bbl conversion; motorsport auto comes to mind. anyway, browse the site and ask questions, that's what we're all about! :D

Hi Andrea, if the car runs reasonably well I wouldnt remove the twin carbs. The 4 barrel conversion can make the car run worse from what I've heard. The twin carbs are very reliable and can be rebuilt or swapped for better ones from this website. www.ztherapy.com They can get you parts for yours if needed. Bruce is the guy to talk to about Z carbs.

Others may tell you the 4 barrel conversion works, but others will tell you don't do it.

Beware of rust lurking underneath the car. Behind the front wheels is a problem area. Have your step dad get under the car and really check it out. If all you have is surface rust then you have a good solid car. Look under the floor carpeting as well. Can you tell us the serial number of the car?

First off welcome to the site!! You should update your profile indicating where you are located so that people can direct you to local places for Z car stuff if any exist in your area. You will find that this site is the most helpful and knowledgable on the web not to mention the most willing to provide assistance to others.

Now on to your questions...I say don't do the 4bbl conversion. If you carbs are all jacked up then get rebuilt ones from ZT (the website mentioned above) and be done with it. This will likely cost you less also!

Rust...that's a four letter word! No really, it is. :) Rust is really the only thing that will kill these cars short of a tragic accident. Anything mechanical can be fixed/replaced/repaired pretty easily but rust can become a problem not worth attacking. Search this site and do your homework, there have been lots of discussions about where to look for rust on these cars and how to repair certain areas. There are patch panels made for some comon rust locations like the dog legs, but for others like the battery tray you are on your own.

well my step dad wants me to do the conversion because they are easier to maintain also he needs to no what kind of manafold to use? The rust it si only surface i need to nowhere to get block sanders i live in kentucky

SU's are far superior (IMO) to the 4 barrel's out there. They give great mileage and performance. I love mine and am very impressed with there performance. I have various engine mods and the SU's are stock and keep up with the modifications I have with no problem at all.

If you have surface rust you will most likely have interneral rust too. You might find rust on the floor boards when you get into the interior. Look at the batery tray and the hatch rear area too including the spare tire well and check the frame rails.

It is great to hear you have an older Z. They are great cars and with love thay can continue to be great for a long time. They are also able to take a beating and survive very nicely as long as you take care of them.

If you are dead set on the 4bbl conversion both Arizona Z Car and Clifford make the manifold for better than $400 new (used will still cost you better than $200) then you will have to go buy the carb.

Seriously, you will be better off with the SU carbs...the engine and carbs were designed to work together for maximum performance.

If you look at the 4bbl intake you can clearly see that the #3 and #4 cyl will be running rich, the #2 and #5 will be 'about' right, and the #1 and #6 will be lean. This is a VERY poor running situation.

Please, do your research before doing this swap.

The best $20 you'll spend with your Z... ZTherapy sells a set of video tapes that you and Dad can watch and rework those SU carbs, tune, and teach others how too. Check em out under videos. "Nothing but SUs"

Mrs. Chino sets up our SUs too! They're rather easy to understand and not much can go wrong with them once you get them back to par.
