Australian altenator options

I've been looking at doing the altenator swap for a little while now: running an electric fan and a modern stereo has just about pushed mine over the edge...

Everyone seems to do a swap using a maxima altenator, which i've heard isn't heaps better anyway. I was reccomended using a bluebird altenator, which are apparently heaps better. Has anyone heard of this swap?

Is the maxima just a US thing and do the ones we get here in Aus have rubbish altenators?

Hi Jon had a similar problem when i owned a 2+2 the electric fan blew 3 of alternators mind you they were junk yard alternators anyway. This is one of the reasons i've stuck with the clutch fan for now.

In terms of alternators I bought an internally regulating ZX unit quite some time back. Apparently they are 70amp over the standard 60amp. I believe this would be very similar to whatever the Maxima in the states used since they both were L6's and released around the late 70's.

I am not currently using the ZX alternator in my 240z since the current one is doing fine. I guess I'm just replying to say that the ZX alternator might be an option. It didn't help with my problem on my 2+2 with the fan i had FWIW.

Just having a quick think are you sure it's your alternator? Check your Voltage Regulator and check your alternator belt mine had streched and caused my car to almost stall one night under load from having the heater/stereo/headlights all on at the same time and being stuck in traffic for a good 10mins.

talk to a decent auto electrician should be able to tell u what will fit alternators are very multi fit just need same measurement from from of mount to pulley center

Im running a 80 amp off a falcon on my zed with the v8 and 120 amp on my rx4 know idea what that came off but it fits just went to the auto electrician and played around till we found one that fitted

the old xf falcon one was 80 amp

Thanks for the feedback.

My local auto elect. reccomended the bluebird alternator as one that should be a reasonable swap in terms of ease and performance. I was just scoping out to see if anyone had tried it. I reckon i'll change my belt too - I think all the belts are past their best and it shouldn't take much effort (or cash) to do.

Cheers Dave, useful information that... $20, 85amps and an apparently easy conversion might be the ticket. I'm not sure how i'll go with just "fitting the internals", i'm not really sure how hard this will turn out to be - one way to find out though...

I scored an internally-regulated 55amp Bosch unit from an R31 Skyline wagon I'd bought for $500.00.

It bolted straight in (the car had an EFI L24 in it), all I had to do was muck around a bit installing a warning light. Very simple swap. You shouldn't have to muck around with anything internal. Let me know if you do end up getting another alternator and are having trouble wiring it in. I've done a bit of that sort of stuff.
