okay, the people who founded datsun didn't have a name for their company.. they went to the germans (i'm not sure which car company) because the germans made cool names.. the germans said "Dat soon?" and the rest is history... Later they changed to "Nissan" for "Nippon"...

Roughly translated it means "hare","fast rabbit", or "very fast" in Japanese, depending on whose translation you want to believe...
