Mate, that's bloody terrible. I suppose the rescue crew cut the roof off huh ?.

A person would have to be extremely lucky to survive a head on at 100kph. When you stop and think about it, that's like hitting a brick wall at 200kph.

The NZ Herald article states that the accident involving the Z happened at Kerepehi on the Haruaki Plains on Sunday ( 26th ).

The accident involving the British tourist happened "....on State Highway 1 between Cambridge and Hamilton on Thursday" - which would be the 23rd.

Condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

As Alan pointed out, the nationality of the driver of the car that hit the zed was not stated in the article, and was not the english person driving the camper that was mentioed later in the article.

Why doesnt it always seem to be the people that cause the accident survive and the innocents they hit suffer the consequences?

Opps missed that - just a bit upset about head-on of late see below. The Haruaki Plains is a long (long by NZ standard anyway) straight bit of road and this type of accident happens a few times a year. Cause is usually fatigue.

Well the brother in-law last week was also involved in a head-on on the open road (he was doing 90km/h - the other driver?? still waiting the police report). He was driving a 89 Nissan Skyline GTS (R32 4 door with RB25DE) home from work when a young guy coming down the road lost control of his car. Speeding - got the rear wheel on the shoulder i.e. gravel and spun across the road into my bro in-law. The impact was a little to left but still head-on (the other car was sideways - a Subaru wagon). The bro in-law had no time to react so full impact. The accident caused the taillights to pop out (bent the chassis) and the passengers doors won't open the car is a write off (he is using my Datsun 710 (160JSSS) to get to work for now). The R32 does not have any more safety features than the old S30, no airbag, ABS, etc.

So how is the bro in-law? He walked away from the accident with bad bruising and some torn chest muscles. The other driver - walked away also but is in big trouble with the police due to the nature of the crash (we have been told he was luck no one was walking, cycling up the road or they would not be here today and if either car had passengers the same result would have occurred)

They say most accidents happen with-in a 3km radius from home well my bro in-laws happened just 2km from home.

I am currently in the process of stripping everything out of a 71 in order to make a race car. I had no idea just how unsafe the Z cars are until I started into this one. I have been driving another 71 and autoxing it too (the one in the avitar) and allways knew they were not the safest cars out there. Now after taking one down to just the unibody for the first time, I understand just how dangerous these cars are. The sheet metal is very very thin and there is nothing in place to protect you from a side impact except for the thin metal of the door shell. My car is very low to the ground and more than once I have been nearly hit by trucks and SUV's because they cannot see me. This Sunday a friend and I (also driving a 71) were nearly hit by a truck changing lanes. I do not want to end up like the people in the picture did.

These cars are dangerous but I am not going to stop driving mine but I do drive more defensively and some of the high speed runs over the passes around here might be a thing of the past. The car's light weight is what makes it so fun but the catch is; the light weight (no safety reinforcements and thin metal), that is what makes it so dangerous.

That's just plain horrid. Yep there are too many head-on collisions on NZ roads of late. Too many bloody idiots out there. Too many cheap fast cars in the hands of boys.

It is likely that someone in the Auckland Zed Club would know this car.

Before my Z touches the road, a new seat belt will be installed, and i was looking into a way to reinfore the interior, maybe running a small rollcage. This deffinantly puts a new perspective on driving a Z.

It's like my plates on my other car reads...PAY ATTN. After all, my life depends on it. Anything beyond that is up to God to decide.

I'd rather be driving a responsive car like my Z than some 4000 pound barge riding on a suspension made of marshmellows.
