A good buy?

Hello all! First, I want to start off by saying that my dad used to own a green '71 240Z when he was in college around that time, and he talks about how much he loved the car. So I wanted to surprise him, and I have been looking for a pretty good example close by for a decent price. I located one, and want to know if it is something I should go for. I emailed the guy and asked a lot of questions, mainly about rust ! Here is where i found the ad:

Is $6,500 that he asks for too much? I think it is a little steep, but am not sure. I am a newb when it comes to Z-Cars. Anything I should know/ask/look for? Thanks a lot, I greatly appreciate it! -JB

JMHO, but I think it's a bit steep. The interior looks average at best, and not original (seats). Some might see that as a plus, I wouldn't. Next would be the condition of the paint; it almost looks like it's in primer? You can possibly see the lime-yellow original color under the poor paint job. Another item is the tailights; not original. The rest of the car looks to be a 240Z (70-72) but the tailights are definitely 260-280 units. Again, not a big deal if you aren't concerned about originality but for $6500 I think you could do better. The only reason I would be interested at that price would be if it were totally (and I mean TOTALLY) rust free. From what I see, I would tend to doubt that.

Again, this is just my un-professional opinion.

That price seems WAY too steep. The ad says "virtually" rust free, which would raise my eyebrows. I think you could do better for that price. Not sure where you're located but you may want to start looking in CA, AZ or NM on collector car trader.

My thoughts are that at HALF that price, it would still be OVER priced.

This may be a case of someone trying to rescue his money from a deal that was too good to be true.

Let it go to someone on the East Coast. It's a bargain for them, and the seller can get his money back, and you don't overpay for something you can get cheaper....get my drift?

Sorry, but that thing doesn't even look like its worth $2500...I mean when you list as a selling point the stereo, it's time to move on to another car....

Yeah...is that primer? and the wheels are pretty cheesy non-early 70 wheels as well...280 lights?

Offer $2000, if you can't set the hook, move to the next hole!

$6500 for something that needs so much to be a nice 72 240Z.

The reason he has'nt seen many in that conditon is he hasn't bothered to look!

If he can't be bothered to tist his mods, you can't be bothered to trade your money for his car!

Wow, I did not expect so many replies! Thanks to everyone here, I appreciate it. Firstly, I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago, so this guy is pretty close by. I have been looking for a pretty good example of a '72 Z around the midwest so I can look at it and not have to ship it (which I found out was what my dad ACTUALLY owned -- not a '71 like I said earlier).

I checked out the link to the selling car, which would be nice, but it is too far away. I know, it is going to be hard to find a good relatively less-rusty model up here in the midwest, but I can always dream, right? I am in no rush. I also want one with A/C, whether original (which means '72+), or aftermarket. Where is a good place to start looking besides here and eBay?

So, basically, if this guy wants to sell, I should look for $2000? I asked him to look under the carpet on the passenger side too. It sounds like a dead end with this one. Actually, if I can get a COUPLE nice Z's for a decent price, hell, I might get myself one too! I drove one about 2 years ago and it was pretty cool, and I am a valet and drive EVERYTHING !

I would agree with the other responses here. That 240Z is way overpriced for what you would be getting in return for your $6500.00. I have learned the hard way...don't be afraid to travel and if that is not an option ask others here that might live close to a prospect and I think you'll find a few members here are more than willing to go and check out a Z for you. Unfortunately since I live in the rust belt like yourself Z cars that have been driven in these areas tend to have alot of rust. Another point is not to be in a big hurry as I have made that mistake as well and lived to regret it later.

A while back a guy posted a message on the Z Owners of Minnesota website saying he had seven 240Z's he wanted to sell. Maybe he still has a couple of good ones?

I think most of them have been modified or are incomplete (I know for sure that three are just parts cars). Other than that I really don't know much about what he's selling.
