Posted July 2, 200519 yr comment_129280 I looked all over this forum but could'nt find it. I need to know how the woring harness under the dash hooks up to the engine harness. I have the haynes wiring diagram but cant seem to understand it. Does anyone have an actual picture. This would help me alot thanks. The problem is that there is a white/red wire that gets hot so i think i hooked up something wrong. The car would turn over and never start but now it wont even turn over. So i sont know why it wont start. PLease HELP!!!!! July 2, 200519 yr comment_129292 I don't find a white /red but there is a red/white is this what you mean ? The red /white goes to and from the combination switch and to he headlights. according to the '72 diagram. is this what you are asking? July 2, 200519 yr comment_129342 could you be talking of the fuseable link ? the large white wire that connects to the + side of the starter ? July 2, 200519 yr Author comment_129351 hi gary. Here are some pics of the wires i'm confused about. I saw that you have a 73 240z, but i think that most colors would be the same i think. ? If you can just get me a pic of where the wiring harness under the dash connects to the engine harness this would help me a bunch. I already have a bunch of diagrams and cant understand them. Kind of a messed up pic but its of three wires coming out of the bundle of wires going towards the rear of the car. Taillights maybe? idk. Starting with the left wire, it has two wires, one is solid black, the other is red with a black stripe. They are in this black thing. THese wires go in another bundle towards the rear of the car. Where do they connect to (what are they for?). Then there are two other wires in another bundle (in the same harness going towards the rear of the car). One is black and the other is read with a blue stripe. I dont know anything about either of these wires, where do they go? If someone has a pic of they'res that would help a ton. I think this wire is hooked up right, but i'm not sure (i know nothing of electric stuff in cars). This wire gets hot whenever i hook up the white/red stripe wire in the pic below. ? i dont know why this happens. btw this is a pic of the connection between the underdash harness going into the engine harness. Where does this go? it comes out of the harness under the dash. ???? :disappoin As you can see it a mess. THe dash is just laying there where the passenger seat would go. I need to get it to run. Like i said it worries me because it use to turn over and not start. now it wont even turn over. PLEASE HELP ME! if anone can get me a pic it would be a great help. Heres another dumb question. How do you read wires? Lets say theres a wire that white with a red stripe, would you write "white/red" or "red/white" or nether? Sorry for asking a stupid question, but i'm so lost. July 2, 200519 yr comment_129355 The small colored line is always the second color in the description. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16427-wiring-harness-conection-problem-car-wont-start/#findComment-129355 Share on other sites
July 3, 200519 yr comment_129395 guy714 ok. picture # 1 red/ blue is coming from the inspection light in the enine bay and connects to a green/blue before connecting to the fuse block. Black wires are ground wires. red/black is coming from the head lights and is connected to the same color and goes to the combo switch. # 2 I cant tell anything with the picture. # 3 white/red comes from the alternator and connects to the same color and goes to the fuse block then from there it goes to the ammeter gage. Now this is from a schematic for a '72Z . I hope this is of some help. Send escanlon a PM , he is the wireing guru here . At least it is a start. July 3, 200519 yr comment_129444 yeah, white/red is the alternator. red/white is the headlights. they also are the only 2 plugs that are physically the same under there and can be unintentionally reversed (I've done it, fried 2 headlight switches and replaced alternator/voltage regulator and various other parts trying to figure out why my lights didn't work and the car wouldn't hold a charge). From your 3rd to last picture, it looks like the alternator wire is a little burned up, or at least dirty.
