73 Z door latch bushing thickness

Any one know the correct thickness of the rubber bushing (for lack of a better word) on the door latch where it contacts the striker plate?

EScanlon?

I'm trying to figure out if I can make one with heat shrink or vinyl tubing or if I have to scour the junk yards.

A picture would be wonderfull since I've never seen this piece of rubber before.

Having never seen this part myself, I'm going off the following statement from EScanlon.

"If you'll look on the door mechanism, you'll note that the "rotary" part, the one that gets pushed by the latch on the car, has two lobes. The first lobe points straight down when the door is open, and the second is pointing at the door. The first lobe SHOULD have a rubber "coat". Almost like if it had been a piece of tubing that got stretched over the lobe. That's the rubber that finishes the "sound" proofing on the door."

This seems very likely to be the cause of a bad rattle I have with my otherwise perfectly aligned doors. Maybe I should just replace the latches - but something tell me junk yard latches won't be much better.

I'm starting to think along the lines of tool dip - but a picture would be really helpful. This is an otherwise really nicely restored/kept car and I don't want to do anything half-assed. At the same time, the rattle/clunk really detracts from the car's sex appeal.

When we did my resto, I replaced latches and strikers...simply the right thing to do, and they are still available

Ah, I didn't realize I could get them new - NOS? You wouldn't remember where you got them would you?

Both are still available from MSA.....however the latch is part of a door latch assy that is quite pricey ($100 or more) and requires the door to be disassembled, but woth it IMHO

These are not the best pictures but hopefully they'll illustrate what's being discussed. Sorry about the focus, it's darn near impossible to focus in the dark!

If you look at the 2 "lobes" of the latch, you'll note that one of them has rubber on it. At least on one that hasn't lost it's coating.

I think I erred in saying it's the first lobe, it's actually the one in the "6 o'clock" position.
