Worried....how do u protect ur z from being stolen

Another idea (I just thought of this), a lot of Formula One cars have hydraulic jacks built into the bottom of the car, for quick tire changes. If you were to install these AND have a kill switch, you could prop the car up just enough for the wheels not to touch and take out the key for the killswitch. Even if they start it, its not going anywhere, but this would be very expensive.

Cheap Alternative = Cinderblocks :)

Sorry, wrong cars. Your thinking of Indy cars. And they are pneumatic. Formula 1 has a guy with a jack dolly, one in the front and one at the rear.

Back to the subject of theft deterrance.

You have to have a system that is convenient. Are you really going to take the steering wheel off when you run into the grocery store to buy a gallon of milk? Or your taking your date to a restaurant, are you going to pop the hood and remove that hot rotor? Even if you do eventually you will forget or think "Oh, I'll only be a minute".

Your system should be a secret, convienient, effective and safe. Sorry Enrique, but if someone steals your car and gasses are released in the cab and the driver gets into a car accident, guess who's liable.

Like you said, deterrance is the best way. Park in well lit areas, hide that $500 stereo, install an alarm system with the siren in the inside of the car. Always lock up, use a visual theft deterrence system from a flashy light, sticker, The Club, missing steering wheel, dog, etc..

Bottom line is if someone wants your car bad enough they will damage the car trying or they will succeed. Once it's gone there is only one sytem that will return your baby. Lojack. (once again I'm not advertising)

i used to own a '72 camaro (i did love that car) that i installed a kill switch on. i had it wired with a switch between the + terminal of the coil and ground, effectively killing the coil. it would crank forever but since the ignition was grounded out, it would never get a spark and start.

even if the sb (scumbag) accessed the ignition switch and tried to start from there, or turned ignition switch on and tried to jump the starter, still wouldn't start. wire was not at coil (too obvious and easily ripped out) but tapped in and buried further up the line going to the dizzy so they would have to take the time to try to trace the wire (if they could figure out what was up). probably wouldn't work for the serious sb thief, but definitely would stop joyriding sb's (yea, i really hate thieves :tapemouth:tapemouth:tapemouth).

no electronics on the '72 camaro so i don't know if this would fry any computers or other more modern components on newer Z's, but i was going to do the same thing on my '71Z.

has anyone tried this or can anyone see a problem with this approach on a Z?

just want to make sure this will work and not interfere with/screw up anything that is specific and unique to the Z.

The idea is to have a security system that has built in layers. These can include but not be limited to the following:

1) alarms - don't have one and don't like them

2) kill switch - installed between the battary and ignition (summit racing)

3) fuel pump switch

4) removable steering wheel/the club, etc.

5) flashing red light on dash

6) sticker on the side window

7) lojack

8) removable stereo

Where you park is always important.

Look for a new product from Bad Dog Parts this fall that will add another layer of defense and make it even harder for someone to steal your Z. We hoped to have it ready for the ZCCA convention in August but I've been out at the Depot in Umatilla, Or for too long to get the project finished. We are testing the furnaces where nerve gas is being destroyed. No samples are available.

rarely do i ever park mine for more than 3-5 minutes and its somewhere I can watch it , guess I am ultra paranoid , mine stays in the garage under a locked cover and usually with another car infront of the garage door, I just need to get a sticker to put on the drivers side window saying " OWNER NOT AFRAID TO GO BACK TO PRISON " :)

I have a buddy that produces nerve gas naturally-if we could just get it to quit eating paint, plastic, metal, and glass. He could fart in your car-just pay his travel expenses and for a meal from Taco Bell(he is waiting for the future as told in Demolition Man), drive him back to the airport, and the car would be safe from thieves!-For those of you worried about liability, his gas has no proven ill effect on human tissue, but is severly gasp, tear, and profanity inducing. Unless the thief caries a video camera-it is hard to prove those effects in court when there is not physical evidence or proof through testing that would hold up in court.

I would not reccomend it for deterent when you are on a date or transporting a pitcher-she, he, or it wont allow any base hits after breathing that stuf.

In College I had a roomate with a massively rusty 1967 Buick Special-the car was so rusty I had to hold the back window while he put the parkig decal on.

He had another sticker that read: "If you value your life as much as I value this car, you will move on. Is this really worth trading your life for?"

That car was never broken into, bumped, or ticketed for on campus parking violations.

I was never sure if it was the rust, the sticker, or the fact that the owner was a Public Safety Officer(campus rentacop) that kept that piece of junk so safe!

The less valuable the car appears, and the more time intensive or public the theft appears to be, the greater the chances the car will be left alone.

An invisible alarm will get tested, a highly visible and sensable one will not.

Think of it like dog poo, if you don't see it you probably will step in it. If you see and smell it(unless you have had a bad day, and drive a van or a crane) you won't!

Get a gun club sticker and put it on your window.

Get a quality alarm, and use a club lock at the same time.

The more work it is to steal your car, the less likely it is to get stolen.

But if a thief really wants your car then theres not much you can do about it.

I've read on a UK datsun site that in the UK that they even drive up next to the car with a flat top truck fitted with a crane, throw a strap under the car, hoist it up onto the truck and drive off with it. Aparently they send the datsun parts to Africa where datsuns are common, but parts are expensive? Doesnt really sound very likely to me.

I like the nerve gas idear but ........

What about putting another ignition coil under the seat connected to the recluctor coil with hidden kill switch, the faster they rev the more they buzz

What about shorting out /blowing up the battery use lots of transistors or scrs to short it out

What about just overload the battery so it will flatten quickly

a stainlessteel exhaust might work, use the batt maybe melt part of the exhaust out

would be very noisy to drive

I have been learking , and what mostly I see here is cartoon solutions to a serious question . Dogs in the car yah right , nerve gas , give me a break. Air horns ?? maby . Removing the steering wheel or flattening the tires . Yah real practial when going in the market for a 6 pack . Like Ed said , it must be convient to the owner , It must easy to deploy and I think disabling the car. Layering the protection is a vary good idea. This way the most convient one will be used then from there depending on if you are leaving the car for a time ,like going to dinner or shopping then a secound leavel could be deplyed. Kill switches , they have done and done and done. Over done , HOWEVER, maby that is thought , install three or four switches , just remember a simple hot wire from the battery will defeat the kill switches. How about relays that disable the power to the entire car, or electric fuel pump , and or killing the power to the ignition either the plus or minus or both to he coil . I am not going into what I am doing here , just making comments on the possabilities that are useable . Gary
