Posted July 13, 200519 yr comment_130546 Hello Ok I am going to be putting my 2.8L motor and 5 speed soon and I will put in the R200 a little later when I get the remaining parts. I have a 71 240z. For right now which drive shaft should I use with the new transmission? The 240z or the 280zx drive shaft? I need to put the motor and tranny in now and move the car back to my house about a block and half away. So the car does not really need to be running now that I think about it. I still need to wire in a fuel pump in and need to order a header and exhaust system. Thanks for any help.Waylon Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16557-drive-shafts/ Share on other sites

July 13, 200519 yr comment_130553 Dependant on which 5speed your'e using governs which drive shaft you should use. The earlly tranny uses a flange type output whereas the later one uses a sliding spline connection. There are also a number of different lengths, three I think. The input to the diffs are the same flange connection on R200s and R180S. There were 4 different driveshafts, 3 of which are interchangable between trannies and diffs. Difference is the length. Early 240 (70-71), all the rest of s-30, and s-130. The 4th driveshaft is for Borg-Warner T-5 only. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16557-drive-shafts/#findComment-130558 Share on other sites

July 14, 200519 yr comment_130646 Matt,Don't mind Will, he's really a nice bloke, :lick: :lick: Your questions are not STOOPID at all mate. It just shows that you're still mentally oriented towards benz's and beemers and not yet fully conversant with Zeds as were most of us at one time,(even Will). If you have the time, browse the tech threads. You'll pick up a lot of info that way.Rick. :devious: :devious: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16557-drive-shafts/#findComment-130646 Share on other sites

July 15, 200519 yr comment_130762 Now Wait a minute, I never said you had to sell the benz-I mean once the Z is right, you still need some thing to keep the dust off the floor of the garage! It is always nice to have a "beater" to drive while you are upgrading the Z, a benz is useful in that respect! I just believe you will find the Z more fun to drive, any you will remember "I told you so!" I have driven many cars, and of all of them, the Z is the most fun, not the fastest, not the best handling, but the most fun.I hope you find the same happiness behind the wheel. Will Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16557-drive-shafts/#findComment-130762 Share on other sites

Its only to make more room for another BMW. :devious: I know the z will be fun thou. I know that. Like you said may not be the fastest but i can make it fast. I hope :nervous: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/16557-drive-shafts/#findComment-130780 Share on other sites
