Seat belt clips

I saw those clear plastic washers and screws in my extra parts. Now I know where they go. But, what are they? Does something slip over these plastic screws or ????????????

Wait a minute... I but they are there to keep the plastic from warping. Am I right?

According to McMaster-Carr the plastic washers act as a finishing and cushioning washer.

That center fastener location of the panel is at a weak point and tends to crack/break over time. I've taken them out, cleaned them really well, and superglued steel rods to the inside at the point beside where the screw goes through it to brace it up.

I have seen these in chrome at upholstery shops. Not original but they will keep the plastic from shifting around until you get an OEM one.

McMaster carries them in black or white plastic. The only other concern is the size.

Here are a couple of shots I took of the seat belt hanger and rear window trim screw with clear plastic washer. I also took a picture of a page in the owner's manual that shows how the seat belt hook is used.

The interior of my '73 240Z was disassembled when I bought it. I found the seat belt hangers among a bunch of small parts that came with my car. The trim screw and plastic washer for each side were missing. I scrounged through several salvage yards to find the ones I have. :cross-eye

I have seen similar plastic "washers" at Ace hardware, but I think they were more of an off-white color, not clear. And, I haven't tried to find a new one that is the same size as the original. :ermm:

Hey Ken, your hanger isn't angled back properly according to the manual! I love this conversation. Everyone is right-on correct to the best of my knowledge. The screw that holds the seat belt hanger is chrome and about the same size as Dan described previously. Is there a big demand for the washers? I have a few laying around and they could be made without too much trouble. Just so everyones knows, my cars are not this way at all. I don't have the washer or the screw, my coat hooks are chrome knobs and the belt hook screws to my seats. When the seats came with retract mechanisms, the belt hooks were moved to the side of the car.

Interesting. I'll have to go look at the original seat covers that I pulled off to see if there is a hole on the side. My car came without the retract mechanisms but was one of the earliest cars to get the pocket in the floorboards to hold the mechanisms. There was even a rubber plug in the unused threaded hole in the pocket since the original seatbelts only needed one bolt there. I have since added the later seatbelts.

Maybe someone can clear up the seat belt issues cause I don't have a clue; my 1972 10/71 has lap belts only, has holes in the floor for retractors...were 3 points an option, and were they factory or dealer? I would like some retractors...do I just keep asking 1972 240 parts people if they have some or what? when did the non retract 3 points come onto the scene?

I think that all Z cars came with shoulder belts. You should have the attachment point up high in the quarter window trim panel. If your lap belts are original you can kind of twist the webbing on the male portion of the seat belt latch and you'll notice a hole where the shoulder belt portion attaches. When I bought my car in 1985 there were no seatbelts so I had to add some aftermarket lap belts.

Three point seat belts with shoulder straps were standard on all models from day one. The early early belts had black buckles and the top was a lift release like ariline buckles. The later series one belt buckles were push button release with a Z logo in the middle. The chrome hardware for the two varieties differs in shape and size as well. In both cases, the shoulder strap clips on to the lap belt as Mike indicated. Can't seem to find a picture of the early belts. Here are the later style non-retracting belts.
