L24 or L28

Hi i have a 1972 240z parts car, but the engine only has 50k miles on it, and the car im restoring (1976 280z) has 150K miles on it. The L28 engine didnt run to great when it was assembled, but the L24 was fine. If i were to put the L24 in the 280 what would be my losses and gains? Would i still be able to use the fuel injection system on the L24 or are SU's better? ( i dont mind adjusting and tunning them). And could i also swap the tranny too? Just wondering if everything is compatible.

The L24 & the L28 are pretty much direct bolt on's. You will be loosing in the horsepower department and gaining nothing. As far as the fuel injection goes it will depend on the head. There are grooves cut into the intake runner of FI heads. Some will say carbs others FI. It's up to you.

Before you do anything check and make sure that the L28 doesn't just need a tune-up. Your going through a lot of trouble swapping engines when all you might need is some new spark plugs and a tune.

The tranny's are swappable also. Keep the flywheel, clutch,& pressure plate with the tranny.

thanks for the response ed. I did the tune up and all that good stuff but the engine is coming out anyways ( im doing a frame up resto). Ill look into it, but i did run into one problem. The heat shield that mounts to the exhaust mainfold is blocking some bolts and nuts to remove the manifold, anyone have a trick to get that thing outa the way? i can barely fit my hands in there to find where the bolt is... kinda irritating. Anyways im not to worried a bout a few HP, in all honesty i think the l28 lost some of its Zip ( i dont believe those 150k miles were easy miles). Maybe i could just sell the L24 and tranny, buy a 5 speed tranny( or get one from the boneyard) and put the money into the L28. Couple ways i could go just lookin for some input.

Most people go the other way... Put a 280 into a 240. If you want a good running car then put the 240 into you 76. Take some time and rebuild the 280. When you get the time and money to finish the rebuild, just stick her in. I would run the 240 stock with a mechanical fuel pump, SU's and your 280 ignition. KISS or Keep It Simple, Stupid!

By the way, do you have any parts from your seats? I need one of the round covers from the seat adjusters. You have one of these?

I was gona say that. Thats what i'm gona do. From a 280 into a 240. But i want to do it for performance reasons. I dont think there are any gains to doing it the other way.
