Why the Z

I'm blaming the whole thing on Carl Beck. Honest. He told me to do it ! ! !

I like the response "It fits me like my favorite clothes". Right on.

One restores any car because they like it and they like to work on cars. As simple as that. I like to work on cars. Her Majesty fell into my lap many years ago and I like her. She's interesting, easy to work on, and a unique example of a famous car. I'm very proud of her. Princess 27th fell into my lap on eBay last year. The electrons must have been in alignment and my monitor directed me to a unique opportunity in Delaware. I just followed the fates. I don't know...you do one car...you do two cars...la-de-da.

Matt, please extend my greetings to your dad for doing what he is with you. You will treasure these moments. Enjoy the ride.

A couple of other comments: the stock L24 is not slow. Everyone knows that. The 240Z is a Japanese import sports car, not American. At the time, it competed in the American sports car market with cars from Jaguar, Porsche, Triumph, Fiat and Opel. Someone said something about crashing one and fixing up another. You may not survive the crash. S30 body shells are NOT safe by today's standards. Keep that in mind when you are out hot rodding around. Furthermore, crashing is a violation of rule # 1 and immediately puts you in the poor driver category and subjects you to public ridicule! :knockedou

Hanging out with you freaks has actually been a fun part of my restoration experience. When I started, I didn't realize how big a deal this is and how many people are restoring Zs. This Z thing has been fun.

26th is scheduled to return home next week. All the welding work is done and she is getting her final de-rust dip this week. A huge hurdle is passed and I'm well on my way to $35,000. She's going to look much better.

What the hell is a chevy '38 Coupe anyway? and who cares what a chevy man thinks. He can stick to antiquated pushrod driven relics from the 30's.

I bet a 30's car doesn't look as good as a Z, and I bet he's spent a lot more than you would spend to restore a Z. Probably not much useable bits on a '38 car. I bet he has had to replace almost everything in order to get a nice drivable car.

For your chevy friend, he probably doesnt think a japanese car is worth the metal its made from.

Who cares about resale value. If you intend to resote a car and make some money from it, forget it. You always spend more that you can sell the car for.

As for me. I'm restoring my Z because I love they way they look, and I intend on keeping it forever. I'm doing most of the work I myself because I can and I enjoy it, and when its done and someone comments "nice car", i'll get a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside, because I did it, instead of paying somone else to do it.

If you cant shrug off the redneck, nuthin's as good as a American V8 ( we get it here in Austraila form the Ford/Holden bogans too.) comments then maybe a Z isn't for you. You'd probably be happier in an old corvette or a mustang....

...Till someone in a 240z with an RB26DETT under the bonet blows your doors off.

Only if that's part of the measure of your enjoyment of a car. I've owned lots of cars. No matter what you have, someone out there always has something faster, better handling, better looking, better in some way. That's all subjective anyway. My enjoyment of the Z or any Datsun or any other vehicle I choose for that matter has very little if anything to do with what someone else thinks of it. They don't have to drive it, they don't have to repair it when it breaks, they don't have to replace the parts that wear, etc. I do. Let that man enjoy his 38 Chevy for whatever reason he does. It's his car and his opinion. We all should be entitled to that.

Hobbies should have no other reason than enjoyment. My hobby, or at least one of them, is working on my Z. I enjoy it, it is easy to work on, and when working on it I get a feeling of pride and fulfilment on a job well done. I own a Z because I choose too, I'm restoring my Z because I choose too. What other people think really doesn’t matter in the great scheme of life for the most part, there is nothing worse than surrendering your choices to the opinions of others.

Why restore a Z?

Because I choose too.... nuf said, no further explanation required.

Emphasis Mine.

This is EXACTLY what happens. Great words Stephen.

I recall this one dude in Basic Training when I was entering the Air Force. Even though I was Dorm Chief (i.e. the fool who gets blamed for everybody in the flight's mistakes), he'd continually give me sh!t every morning as we walked into the shower (Communal shower). He'd shout with a small glee of laughter while pointing at my ~clam digger~ and ask "What a tiny little thing....who the hell are you going to please with that?".

As IF I would discuss this with him, let alone take it back to the store for a larger size. Last time I checked, you're stuck with what you get.

Well after a few days of this, I finally got fed up, and in front of just about the whole flight, when he once again did his shpiel, I shouted back: "ME you idiot! But I just want to know why you keep looking at MY d!ck? Is it because you like them? Or something else? Speak up!!!" And that ended that.

This guys sounds a bit like my Flight Mate years ago. Needs to make noise denigrating you and your choices in order to make his appear to be better or more desireable.

Next time he starts spouting the "negative" points about the Z.....look him straight in the eye....smile like if you were saying "You poor misinformed fool"....and say: "You're right!". Vary the method, but always agree with him.

Eventually, he might ask why you agree yet do nothing....smile - as before- and say "You're right!"

Why restore a Z? Well i chose a Z to restore over every other car i could have because A: its easy to work on B: parts are obtainable C: there is no other car quite like it D: its fast depending on what you do to it. E: Handles amazingly F:It just looks... coool :) I could do the whole damn alphabet. I think the question is Why not restore a Z?

Gosh Enrique, how do you follow that. I know I've always liked the cars, ever since I was in elementary school when they first appeared on the scene. When I saw two sitting on the edge of a horse pasture I knew I had to buy them. One had an engine (1971) and the other didn't (1972). The price was right, but little did I know not only would these become a hobby, but a side line to earn a little income selling parts on eBay (of course I buy much more than I sell, oh well.) They're not the fastest cars, not the most aerodynamic, and the rust factor is terrible. They are, however, one of the sexiest cars, can be made to go fast and take the twisties better than a lot of their American counterparts. I've become obsessed and can't explain why -- just am.

well guys you should feel proud- you saved me from the grips of sucide. My friends really got to me yesterday, and I was intoxicated in sorrow when I wrote it. Looking back, there are plenty of reasons why I would restore my Z and why I am. And older Chevy's or Ford's are way too common. And I never plan on selling the Z after I'm done restoring her, assuming I ever finish.

Why should I care what others think? I really don't, but I guess I was being an impresionable jackass and let their banter get to me. I'm just tired of everyone saying, "You're wasting your time and money". Why can't other people be injected with a shot of "Z-Awesome" right into the bloodstream like we all have pulsing through our bodies? It's a cryen shame......
